Of all the issues to break on the Times-Standard Web site today, they attacked the ER for its inaccurate report about a Fortuna teacher who didn't turn herself in last night as reported, but instead, turned herself in this morning.

I've seen both newspapers butcher facts, make inaccurate statements in court stories and overall fuck up, but never have I seen the TS so subtely, yet strongly, give the birdie to the ER.

The Mirror put it very well to say this had nothing to do with inaccurate info so much as personal animosity. I noticed the TS throw their reporter energy toward the courts after Wilkinson came on board and started reporting the hell out of it.

In what seemed to be a desperate and face-saving move, the TS sends wordsmith-Thadeus Greenson, Environmental Jockey John Driscoll, newbie Sean Garmire and at times Donna Tam and Jesse Faulkner to the courts, filling the newspaper with crime, crime crime and less community news.

Perhaps this is a re-emergence of years past, when both newspapers threw punches at one another on a regular basis. Certainly, the ER has shaped up recently in terms of its reporting after getting bitch-slapped by the TS for the the past year or so. Perhaps that looming threat, and new leadership, provoked TS leadership to begin calling out the ER on its otherwise trivial errors. Time will tell how heated the future will get.

Recently, I had a discussion with a friend of mine about the subject of honor in videogames. He argues that there can be no honor in a virtual battle, such as in Halo 3. I argue differently.

Firstly, I feel actually following the programmed rules of the videogame is a sign of honor (no cheating, no hacking). Secondly, focusing on the opposition rather than betraying your brethren is another display of honorable actions (no team-killing). Basic stuff right there.

Then there's the tactics you employ. This is where things get very tricky.

For one thing, there is "terrain-exploiting," or using glitches, errors, mistakes, or otherwise obtaining access to various areas of the battlefield that otherwise you cannot physically reach on your own without using another player's assistance (man stack-jumping) or by jumping on a niche in the wall like a lightpost or antenna (Call of Duty 4 is notorious for this, and they still haven't been corrected). This I consider dishonorable, as other players do not expect you to attack from otherwise inaccessible areas of the battlefield, such as outside the map.

Additionally, there is the idea of attacking a player when he is not physically playing, i.e. "away from keyboard." If a player is immobile and standing in a spawn area, or a section of the battlefield that I happen to encounter, and I determine he is not playing or firing on me, then I will not attack. I held my fire on a player who wasn't playing in Halo 3, and I let him go until he returned and fired upon me. My friend who initiated this discussion felt I should have killed him outright, but I disagreed with him.

Lastly, I feel that if one is engaged by a weapon which he can match in strength and defeat (such as a Halo 3 Assault Rifle), he should make every attempt to do so; he should not run and thereby he should engage in close combat and attempt to defeat his enemy. The only times I can see a legitimate reason for breaking contact with the enemy is if you're being attacked by a shotgun, Mauler, Gravity Hammer, or sword. Any other time, the honorable maneuver is to directly engage and return fire on the enemy (unless you're being fired upon by a sniper rifle or Battle Rifle from long range, but the idea of weapons falling into the discussion of honor is still open to interpretation).

So, what about you guys? If there can be honor in a real-world battle, can there be honor in a videogame battle, a virtual contest?

There is a growing epidemic affecting Christian and non-Christian homes across the whole World, Divorce! Its states in plain and simple in the bible;

“For the Lord, the God of Israel says: I hate divorce and marital separation and him who covers his garment [his wife] with violence. Therefore keep a watch upon your spirit [that it may be controlled by My Spirit], that you deal not treacherously and faithlessly [with your marriage mate]”(Malachi 2:16).

The majority of marriage problems begin in the mind. That is the battlefield, Satan is telling all of kinds of lies that affect your feelings and therefore it is difficult to listen to the Truth of the word of God. You may think you cannot be in your marriage any longer, you may believe the lie that you arent happy, you may believe the lie that you should have never married, but the fact of the matter is that they are lies. Remember I have said this before, the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. If he can destroy your marriage, he can destroy your family and continue until he has reached cities. We must take a stand against the enemy and not listen to his lies any longer and put our marriages on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.

Why do I share this with you? There is a movie coming out on September 26 that is called “Fireproof-No partner left behind” it is about just that…marriage. I urge and exhort you to go with your spouse and support this movie, you may need to see it or you may not but you may know somebody who does and this is the perfect opportunity to invite them to see a movie that can change their life and their marriage. Remember live by the word and not by your flesh.

“War changes people”. It’s something that, I think, we’ve all heard at lea

"War changes people". It's something that, I think, we've all heard at least one time or another. It's one of those statements that makes you wonder just how it changes people. And who are those people that change. Earnest Hemingway wrote "Soldier's Home" in 1925 about a soldier who came home changed. There are also many studies about how soldier's change from war. What you don't see as often is how war changes other people who are so closely connected to the soldiers.

When I married my husband, it was pre-9/11. We never thought of him going off to war. We expected seperations, but not like it is now. The morning of September 11, 2001, my husband and I were on leave and visiting family. We were on the west coast and were still in bed. We were awaken by our family that we were staying with after the plane hit the Pentagon. Up until then, they thought it was a horrible accident in New York.

As many of you, I watched in horror as the second plane hit the World Trade Center and as the towers fell. My emotions were all over the place. First of all, I'm a New Yorker and part of my state was attacked. I was shocked, angry, confused and worried. To top it all off, I was pregnant and my hormones made it worse. I also knew at that moment, ours lives were changing forever.

Being a military family, our lives changed quickly. We cut our leave short and went home. Before we left, we could drive through the gates on post, flash our IDs and roll on through. Upon arrival after 9/11, every vehicle was stopped and only people who belonged on post we're allowed on. We were asked to step out of the vehicle and our car was searched. The commissary and exchange were closed because they were running out of stock and delivery trucks were not allowed on post yet. Our mail was slow. Barricades were erected. First they were temporary and later things were re-designed and they were made permanent. Now, every time you enter a military installation, your ID and IDs of all in the vehicle are examined. Instead of all vehicles being searched, they pick a few a day. But the mood has changed.

15 months after the September 11 attacks, my husband deployed for the first time. He was sent to Kuwait prior to the ground forces entry into Iraq. He was there to help prepare for the war. Our daughter was 11 months old and had no clue what was going on. Originally, his orders were for 6 months. As he tells everyone, he did 11-1/2 months on a six-month deployment. This is when I changed.

Even though I had always been an independent woman, I had just moved to a new place, had a new baby and my husband left for war. I spent the year worried about if my husband would be injured or killed. Our friends were there too. Our communications were limited. And in the beginning, mid-tour leave was not in place. I became stronger then I ever thought I could be. My faith has been strengthened and I often thank God for giving me the strength to be by myself. I became a single married parent. I can handle all the household chores and take care of the automobiles too. My view of the world has changed. I am very accepting to all types of people, but I often worry about just who around me would want to destroy my home. Any why shouldn't I? This war is not like other wars where you can identify the enemy. Trust is hard in a place that the enemy could be anyone. This was most evident when a friend of my husband was killed by a soldier in his unit that was Muslim and decided once he got to the battlefield to throw a grenade in one of his comrades tent.

The changes from war are numerous and not only from the battlefield. They come to the home-front as well. While I am able to adapt to changes with my family. Others are changed in a more permanent way. The families of soldiers that do not come home or come home severely injured have other changes. While we continue to move forward in our lives, always remember those that served and changed for your freedom.

If you are a diehard FPS gamers, you probably live in a world of multiplayer goodness, if not you are in the rare minority of single or co-op stricken world of what I like to call ‘games with plot’. But no matter which party you fly your flag under, you are probably still in shock at the quality of Call of Duty 4, arguably the best First Person Shooter on the market in several years. With a driven and inspired plot as well as customizable and upgradeable multiplayer abilities, it seems a daunting task for any company to want to release a shooter into the market without the fear of it failing in the face of a monolith. But one of the most popular First Person Shooter mastering companies out there did have the testicular fortitude to crank out the superb run and gun, Battlefield : Bad Company.
