My brother had the privilage (or err maybe not) of working on this video and he did warn me last week that the graphics weren’t saying a lot due to an ultra tight schedule. Damn he weren’t wrong, this video is BUDGET!

I used to love Craig’s video’s back in the day from the “Fill Me In” era! Anyways “Where’s The Love” is out to download on the 10th November, 12″ vinyl is out NOW! The track is gonna be taken from his greatest Hits compilation.

For much of Kid606’s ten-year career, he’s confounded and confused as often as he’s delighted: for every slice of techno wizardry, there’s been a frankly distressing three-minute cacophony of static and noise or a comedy snippet of A-Ha thrown in for a chuckle. This sense of digital mischief has set him apart over the years, in that he succeeds where precious few do in bringing a sense of personality to electronica.

However, this new EP, a taster in advance of a new album due out in 2009, is perhaps one of the most straightforward things he’s done. Straightforward in the sense that it’s fantastic, pounding TECHNOJOY of the highest level. Absolutely dominated by pulsatile, growling basslines, there are obvious dubstep grooves here, but delivered at the restless, aggressive pace we’ve come to expect from 606.

Elsewhere, old-school handclaps ride over a hurricane of a bassline on ‘Umbilical Bullets’, while ‘The Drip’ brings to mind an update on something the Ganja Kru might have put out in 1996. ‘Bat Manners’ drops the pace a little, all atmospheric reverbs, sluggish, downbeat drum work and a crackling undercurrent that gives it the feeling of a dub classic trying to break its way out of a pocket calculator.

Kid606 has taken the signifiers of classic electronica from the past decade (bits of jump-up, techno, hardcore and bassline all take the lead at various points) to create a miniature tour de force of dancefloor-fillers. The only downside, perhaps, is that there’s little of the flagrant sonic mischief we’ve come to expect, so it’s not stamped through with his personality as clearly as other releases. When it’s as consistently great as this though, who cares?

Dette er Jay Seans “Ride It” remikset av Sunship. Sunship? Ja, tydeligvis. Ceri Evans & co er fortsatt i live. Ingen champagneoverdose der i gården, altså. Uansett hva som er greia, så er dette muligens ganske tett opptil bassline, som er blitt sånn kjempestort nå. Her om dagen satt undertegnede og hørte på piratradio på nett. Der var det mye rør om at bassline suger. Jeg har ikke helt bestemt meg. Men ovennevnte remiks lukter unektelig litt årtusenskiftet. Jeg er overlykkelig.

Med en UK garage-revival må det nødvendigvis være en Craig David i området. Og det er der Jay Sean kommer inn i bildet. Britisk fløtepus med spennende etnisk opphav og to fornavn. Jay Sean er dog ikke bare Storbritannias nye Craig David, han følger også opp Ushers posisjon i USA. Andreskiva heter My Own Way, som for guds skyld ikke må forveksles med Ushers debutskive My Way. Jay Sean heter selvfølgelig ikke Jay Sean, han heter egentlig Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, men det kan bli litt knotete når man skal promotere hjemmesiden sin. www.myspace.com/kamaljitsinghjhooti, liksom?

Jay er selvsagt ganske kjekk også, og i motsetning til vår gamle venn Craig David, har han ikke gått i frisørlærlingfella. Ingen kan vel glemme Craigs debuthår:
Ikke helt heldig med skjegget, heller, gitt. Skjønte aldri helt hvordan han ble såpass sexy at piker under 20 snek seg inn på Neon for å forsøke å forføre ham på bakrommet. Andre likheter: begge er født i 1981 (som trolig er komplett likegyldig).

Craig klamrer seg forsåvidt fast fortsatt, og gjør en helt decent innsats på Kanos “This Is The Girl” som jeg har sett beskrevet som den dårligste låta på skiva, men som vi syns er skikkelig ålreit. Sjekk ut den nye kroppen hans også! Noen har løftet vekter i det siste. Men jeg mistenker at noe har skjedd med synet hans også, da han til stadighet dukker opp i tullete solbriller. The last few day or two have been awesome!

Yesterday I had two of my closest friends round and we just sat and watched all of Incubus’s live DVD’s (Morning View Sessions, Alive at Red Rocks and Look Alive!). Incubus are quite possibly my favourite band and even though they don’t appeal to everyone’s taste I still insist that you’ve got to give them a chance. They have 6 full albums out Fungus Amongus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E, Make Yourself, Morning View, A Crow Left of the Murder and Light Grenades! Each album differs completely with Fungus Amongus being jazzy and funky, S.C.I.E.N.C.E being dark and heavy, Make Yourself being quite possibly THE definition of Alternative, Morning View being relaxing and energetic at the same time listen to understand :P, A Crow Left of the Murder being darker than previous albums and with a new bassist contrasts with that some of their previous work and last but not least Light Grenades which is quite the ‘poptastic’ with Dig being slightly epic :)!

After watching all these Incubus dvd’s it inspired me to pick up my bass and try to learn songs that I’ve previously given up on and I finally cracked it. I’ve been playing bass for about 2 1/2 years but I’m not particularly good cause I only had lessons for 6 months before I needed all my spare time for exams and I never carried on.. I know the basics and can learn most songs given plenty of time but my own improvisation doesn’t really speak much with most of my own bassline’s fixated around one fret..

A friend of mine, a previous member of the band in fact approached me today about possibly setting up a poster selling business with him and asked me to design a few posters for him! It sounds good in idea but I’m a bit unsure of what he wants as he has no particular theme? Ideally I’d do a music poster but for copyright reasons I’ve got to be careful what I do don’t want to get sued now do we! I’ve had a play around on photoshop and i’ll post some rough ideas that I came up with!

Sweating on a plastic air bed inside a tent the same temperature as a pizza oven is not something the Art Sleuth does well. The heat wave this weekend was beating down in Cambridgeshire but we were not going to give up.

The SGP is probably the most picturesque festival you could go to, (it should be on a Carlsberg advert), as it is built around a pretty lake, although the sludge in the lake perhaps is not so pretty. N.B When I say Sludge I do not mean the stuff they grow cornflakes in.

The lake has a pirate ship on it, with boats you can use to get out there. By night the lake is somewhat of a magical experience of gorgeous fairy lighting and decorations everywhere.

Music is of a huge variety from classic folk bands to dance tents playing anything from glitchy house to dubstep. Slightly unfortunate was the rather haphazard program, which tended to say things were what they weren’t. Bassline, for instance, was actually electro-ish stuff, but really if you go just for the music you’ve probably gone for the wrong reason.

Saturday night was the crowd puller with the pirate ship burning down in a dramatic firework display surrounded by flame-throwers and fire lanterns. Grace Jones followed this on the main stage, living up to her Amazonian reputation by opening with “I’m a man eater,” in a crazy tubular outfit. Strutting her stuff in just a corset and little else for another of her many costume changes, her pert bum was on full display to the amazement of the crowd. 60 years old with the buttocks of a 20 year old body builder. Good going Gracey!

Nifty areas like a treetop games tent or a mud-wrestling pond give an alternative to the music and bar/venues. If you fancy watching a zebra wedding or competing in a giant game of twister, watching Hamlet acted out around your campsite or doing may-pole dancing by night, then this is the festival for you.

Seriously chilling out is also something the SGP does well. A cooling marquee with free popcorn, comfy sofas and David Attenborough’s soothing voice on the big screen is something of a lifeline after three days of your blood reaching boiling point in your tent. Perhaps a camper van next time?

Although most comparable to Bestival as a boutique festival and also in ticket price too, it does lack an accomplished music line up. However it goes some way to make up for this by the eclectic mix of artists and the ease at which you can stumble upon new music. Plus the lack of queues ( there is only about 12,000 festival goers making it one of the smallest festivals) and non-stop atmosphere makes this festival an incredible party garden. Let’s hope it is kept a secret!

So, Wiley’s started previewing his next single and, to the dismay of many grime fans, it’s more electro than grime again, heavily sampling Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic. He’s making more moves towards grime with this one though, it’s got a lot more MCing that Wearing My Rolex but it’s major flaw is that the chorus is shit.

JME’s album; Famous?, was out on Monday on iTunes and based on his previous output being essentials to any grime fan, I was all over it like a rash. I was pretty disappointed to be honest, theres not much stand out stuff on there and it kinda feels like just another mixtape. It’s not bad at all, just not as amazing as I’d hoped.

Something interesting off the album is Power, produced by one of my favourite producers; Mr V and featuring everyone’s favourite white man, Tim Westwood.

This instrumental was also vocalled by Durrty Goodz on his Axiom EP released last year. This is something I’d hoped to be able to compare Famous? to becuase, for me, this was a seminal release. Even now it’s stil a great listen and I’ve rinsed it. Bear with the pitched up vocals, it’s not the best track off the EP but it was an easy link.

Talking of Mr V, he’s released a little medley of his bassline tunes for a free download from his myspace. It’s reminded me of how much I rate his productions, so heres a couple of vinyl rips of his past stuff as well.

Mr V’s done a remix of Rolex Sweep as well which I can assure you is extra funky and fully in tune with the summer. Keep your eyes peeled for it

i’m not saying deee-lite are shit. i love them but this song is all most people know and its played out. but you have to have it there. i don’t have to have ‘love shack’ though, i will so survive…

i probably only like this cos its rude, since its a style of music i usually don’t care for. yeah that must be it.

emf - unbelievable

emf are one of the worst examples of early 90s madchester, baggy, whatever you want to call it…at the time though, there may not have been a distinguishable difference between them and the happy mondays.

5ive - slam dunk da funk

5ive were your archetypal wannabe r&b boy band who were more chesterfield than atlanta. so, they were fab in a way only a british boy band can get away with.

four tops - loco in acapulco

the four tops were way past their prime when this was recorded and it was included on the soundtrack to phil collin’s buster, a terrible movie. it’s summer 1988 in three and half minutes, however.

inner circle - sweat

top class cheesy summer reggae. no doubt a purist’s nightmare, but hey, i’m no purist.

joey lawrence - nothin’ my love can’t fix

yes that’s joey from blossom. the one who had a mullet well into the 90s and was endearing for being thick, like so many other joeys before and since. uk people of a certain age - ‘joey!’ hands up who didn’t even know the origin of that insult when they used it?

kylie minogue - better the devil you know

this was covered by steps, and i’m not quite tragic enough to have them on my ipod. kylie is definitely better than steps…i think. yeah, lisa scott-lee is in steps and she’s the epitome of desperation. agreed.

nkotb - step by step

the main reason i love this is the bit in the middle: ’step one! we can have lots of fun.’ wait - was that sung by a donkey? well, danny wood was a donkey, horse, camel, depending on who you asked. this was obviously before jay-z and just about the same time as tony adams, so any of the titles were up for grabs.

pulp - disco 2000

i should hate jarvis cocker for so many reasons. he’s dandy - i don’t get that, i really don’t get the russell brand thing. oh and he should really have given us another ten years - this was only released in 1995, five years before we were supposed to be fully grown. fat chance, i’m not even there yet.

wiley - wearing my rolex

my only real objection to this song, as with countless other bassline tracks, is that i love it. hear me out. i’m getting on, i did speed garage (for that it what this is, kids) the first time round in my uni days. you’re making me feel old…

What to say? Just open your ears. Distant and reverb female voice, powerful bassline, superior beats associated to a set of pure psytrance sounds make this tune not only esthetic but also mind penetrating.

The Doppler Effect’s ‘Beauty Hides’ brilliantly remixed by John O’Callaghan will give you a RedBull effect even though you have just a simple glass of San Pellegrino water in your hands.

PS : let’s try also this same title remixed by The Blizzard in a more softened and sensual way. Kind of ‘lounge’ version.
