<title><![CDATA[¡Oh, Roma...!]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ya he vuelto de Roma, la Ciudad Eterna, única en el mundo por diezmil razones diferentes: hay que visitarla para entender, en su justa medida, de lo que hablo. No hay palabras que expresen la emoción de estar en una ciudad como Roma, donde se mezclan edificaciones de más de dos mil años ("Cuando caiga el Coliseo caerá Roma. Cuando caiga Roma, caerá el mundo") con la modernidad propia de una capital europea (sin ir más lejos, anoche se celebró un macro-concierto organizado por la MTV donde actuaron The Cure y John Legend) y que es, sin duda alguna, la cuna de la civilización occidental.</p>
<p>Ésta era la tercera vez que visitaba la ciudad: la primera vez tenía unos 16 años y no me gustó. Estaba enfadada con el mundo (qué raro en mi...) y, obviamente, mi estado de ánimo influyó en mi percepción de lo que se extendía ante mis ojos y nubló mi entendimiento. Doce años después, durante un maravilloso viaje con 3 amigas por la Toscana, decidimos escaparnos de los campos de vides y hacer una visita relámpago a la "Capital del Imperio". Entonces todo fue distinto: pasear por sus calles y plazas fue una sensación única, a pesar del calor y, desde ese momento, sólo soñaba con volver.</p>
<p>Y volví. Llevaba desde marzo o abril queriendo escaparme a Roma y al final ocurrió: 3 amigas, 6 días de octubre y toda la ciudad para nosotras. Apenas ha quedado un rincón de Roma de los que salen en las guías que no haya visitado. Y jamás había entrado en tantas iglesias: espero que Dios me haya perdonado porque subir la "Scala Santa", visitar cada templo con el que me he cruzado por el camino y cada uno de los 551 escalones que separan a un ser humano del Cielo de Roma desde la Cúpula de San Pedro, bien merece una indulgencia, ¿no?. Aunque sea pequeñita...</p>
<p>Ver de nuevo la Fontana di Trevi (mi monumento preferido en el planeta), sentarme y reir como una niña en la escalinata de la Piazza de Spagna, como si fuera una Audrey Hepburn del siglo XXI, aunque sin Gregory Peck al lado (aunque sí con guapísimos, y altísimos, alemanes), comer helados y pizza, la mezcla de idiomas, cada piedra, cada iglesia, cada ruina, los capuccinos de Antonio, esos extraños viajes en metro...una ciudad increiblemente maravillosa, aunque Italia y sus gentes son caóticos y despreocupados.</p>
<p>Todo eso me hizo echarme a llorar ayer por la tarde, cuando, tras pasar un rato en esa escalinata española que congrega a cada turista que se deja caer por esta ciudad, tomábamos la decisión de volver a nuestro apartamento frente a la Iglesia de la Sta Croce, para preparar las maletas de vuelta a Sevilla. ¿por qué lloré? Supongo que porque, en ese instante, era inmensamente feliz: me había reconciliado definitivamente con Roma y, claro, luego pensé "Quizás no vuelva más o, como mínimo, no lo haré en mucho tiempo": al fin y al cabo, éste es el tercer año seguido que voy a Italia, y en algún momento tendré que cambiar de destino turístico.</p>
<p>Por eso tengo grabada a fuego cada imagen de este viaje, todo lo que he visto y vivido, lo que sentí y respiré, porque no sé cuánto tiempo pasará antes de poder volver a caminar por sus calles empedradas, cuándo volveré a lanzar tres monedas a la Fontana deseando regresar. Espero que muy pronto y que lo disfrute tanto como en este ocasión.</p>
<p>P.D.: En cuanto descargue las fotos del viaje, subiré alguna para dar un poquito de envidia (sana) a quien me lea.</p>

Estreou no cinema em 1951 como personagem título de Rhubarb ao lado de Ray Milland e sob a direção de Arthur Lubin, logo depois adentrou o cinema B de ficção científica participando de A Guerra dos Planetas (This Island Earth, 1955) e como personagem chave de <strong><a title="O Incrivel Homem que Encolheu (The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1957)" href="http://quixotando.wordpress.com/2008/07/20/o-incrivel-homem-que-encolheu-the-incredible-shrinking-man-1957/" target="_blank">O Incrível Homem que Encolheu (The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1957)</a></strong> sob a batuta de Jack Arnold. Depois de passar um tempo na tv ao lado de Eve Arden no seriado Our Miss Brooks, Orangey volta para o cinema no grande papel de sua carreira: O Gato de Bonequinha de Luxo (Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961) , sendo dirigido por Blake Edwards e dividindo cena com Audrey Hepburn. No ano seguinte é dirigido por Gene Kelly em Gigot e em 1964 volta ao cinema B ao lado de Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone e sob direção de Jacques Tourneur em Farsa Trágica (The Comedy of Terrors). Em 1965 encerra sua carreira de quinze anos com Village of the Giants.<br />
Seu treinador, o respeitado Frank Inn, dizia não gostar de trabalhar com ele porque era um gato muito "difícil". Mas afinal, que gato não é difícil? Certo, os castrados, mas nesse caso sou das que são a favor da castração humana.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ah, the MPDG, also known as Manic Pixie Dream Girl, is featured in <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95507953">this fascinating NPR story</a>. She is defined variously as:</p>
<ul>
<li>"That bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."</li>
<li>And as a girl who has no apparent inner life or job, other than to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.</li>
</ul>
<p>Make sure to listen to the story as well to check out the embedded video, and to check out of the list of <a href="http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/wild_things_16_films_featuring">top 16 MPDGs of all time</a> (though according to the criteria, I would have ranked Natalie Portman in <em>Garden State</em> over Kirsten Dunst, even if the latter has an impressive list of movies on her MPDG resume). This all leads the authors to ask fascinating questions such as, </p>

<p>Perhaps Kate Winslet in <em>Eternal Sunshine </em>and Angelina Jolie in the movie <em>Playing By Heart</em>, and I am sure in other of her movies, might be classified as MPDGs, only with a little nightmare thrown in. And does Sandra Bullock in <em>While You are Sleeping</em> qualify as a Depressive Pixie Dream Girl? Is Audrey Hepburn, who is mentioned for <em>Breakfast at Tiffany's</em>, also an MPDG in the brilliant <em>Roman Holiday</em>?</p>
<p>Well, you get the idea. Do you have a favorite MPDG? Do you love them? Do you hate them? Is this a true cinematic type at all? Oh, and in theaters today is Poppy, who the authors claim is <a href="http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/happygolucky/">the latest MPDG</a>.</p>

I love how he speaks about phonetics, how he's able to tell who's from where and the whole idea of teaching a woman (one from the London Slums, especially) to speak properly that he can pass her off as a duchess at an embassy ball. The scene where he screamed 'WOMAN!' at a crying Audrey Hepburn at the start of the movie always manages to make me laugh. Funny thing, these classical movies...</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>Shia LeBeouf plays Kale a young man who has been put on house arrest after assaulting his teacher in this psychological thriller. With little to do in his spare time, Kale begins spying on his neighbors and begins to suspect one of them is a serial killer. With the help of his friends he begins to investigate further, but soon Kale and his friends are in over their heads and Kale’s mom played by Carrie-Anne Moss just might be his neighbor’s next victim. Though the film was predictable and from what I understand a rip-off of Alfred Hitchcock’s <em>Rear Window</em> (which I have yet to see) it was entertaining and it actually made me jump a couple of times.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><em><strong>Scanners</strong></em> (1981) Directed by David Cronenberg (3/5)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>This film had an interesting premise, but the effects don’t hold up very well. <span> </span>In <em>Scanners, </em>a small percentage of the world’s population are scanners or telepaths who can read your thoughts and in the case of the more powerful ones control them. The powerful scanner Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside) is on a mission to start an army of scanners and rule the country if not the world by controlling the thoughts of others. However, there are scanners that disagree with his views who wish to stop him. Among them is Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) who also has strong scanning powers and who with the help of Kim (Jennifer O’Neill)<span> </span>uncovers the mystery behind how scanners came to be. A great sci-fi film, which unfortunately is a bit dated, but still interesting nonetheless. <span> </span><span> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><em><strong>Re-Animator</strong></em> (1985) Directed by Stuart Gordon, Based on the story by H.P. Lovecraft (5/5)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>I absolutely loved this movie! Like <em>Evil Dead, </em>it is campy horror at its best. <!--more--> Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) are medical students intent on finding the secret to immortality, despite Dan’s fiancée Megan’s misgivings. <span> </span>Though they are successful in re-animating several subjects the results are usually disastrous and lead to the death of Megan’s father, who also happens to be the dean of the medical school. Of course, the two re-animate him which leads one of their professors, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), who has a strange fixation on Megan, to discover what they’re up to. Hill hatches a plot to steal the re-animation fluid, thus gaining all the glory, but his attempts are thwarted by West and soon all hell breaks loose.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>October 5, 2008</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><strong>Martin</strong></em> (1977) Written and directed by George A. Romero (3/5)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>A strange and interesting film, <em>Martin</em> is the story of a bizarre young man named Martin who believes he is a vampire. <span> </span>However, he is not alone in this belief, his cousin Tada Cuda who he has recently moved in with also believes he is “nosferatu” and swears to save Martin’s soul before killing him. But if Martin feeds on anyone in town Tada Cuda makes it clear that he will kill Martin whether his soul has been saved or not.<span> </span>This film is interesting because it leaves room for doubt - is Martin really a vampire or is he crazy and is old Tada Cuda simply a superstitious old man? This is what his granddaughter Christina and the parish priest seem to think. This film is a bit dated and its nothing compared to Romero’s <em>Dead</em> movies, but I enjoyed it.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><em><strong>Wait until Dark</strong></em> (1967) Directed by Terence Young, based on the play by Frederick Knott (4/5)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman tricked and tormented by criminals searching for a doll filled with drugs in this psychological thriller, which takes place in one room. The film also features stellar performances by Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>October 7, 2008</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><strong>The Prophecy</strong></em> (1995) Written and directed by Gregory Widen (2/5)</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span>This film was not what I expected at all. I thought it would be more like <em>The Exorcist </em>(1973)<em> </em>or <em>The Seventh Sign </em>(1988), but instead it was more like a supernatural, religious episode of <em>Law &#38; Order</em>. More drama than horror, <em>The Prophecy </em>stars Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen and Eric Stoltz as the angel Simon. Koteas plays a police officer who once intended to be a priest, but was unable to accept the rite due to his loss of faith. He is called in on the investigation of a strange murder involving an extraordinary victim. Soon he finds himself entangled in a war between angels over a dark soul trapped in a child’s body, which it has been prophesized will cast humans from heaven giving God’s grace back to the angels. <span> </span>As always, Walken was amazing and though the rest of the cast was good, this film left something to be desired.</p>

Przykład niesamowitego ostrza słów, które potrafią wywrócić życie do góry nogami. Przy tym wątek lesbijskiej miłości pokazany niezwykle subtelnie, głównie z racji tego jak kontrowersyjny był to temat na owe czasy. Martha, typ niepewnej siebie neurotyczki, zaczyna dostrzegać jakim uczuciem darzy od wielu lat swoją kompankę, zbliżający się wielkimi krokami ślub z Jackiem zaczyna ją coraz bardziej irytować, cały czas towarzyszą jej wyrzuty sumienia, obwinia się za powstałą sytuację, w każdej plotce wszak jest ziarenko prawdy. Dla Karen praca z dziećmi to całe życie, nie śpieszno jej do za mąż pójścia, momentami sprawia wrażenie oziębłej i obojętnej dla swojego lubego, czym podsyca nadzieję Marthy i jednocześnie pogrąża ją w jeszcze większym poczuciu winy.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Siła filmu Wylera leży w fenomenalnym duecie MacLaine – Hepburn, których postaci koncertowo się kontrastują, a zarazem uzupełniają, przez co fascynującym jest obserwowanie dynamizmu ich relacji. Niezwykle przekonująca Shirley MacLaine szczególnie w końcowych partiach filmu, wygrywa moim zdaniem pojedynek aktorski. Oczywiście lata 60' rządzą się swoimi prawami, stąd momentami irytujące wydawać się może swoiste obchodzenie tematu, często stosowane niedomówienia, pół słówka, osobiście uważam, że ma to również swój urok.</p>

<p>I am looking at my closet right at this moment. And it just looks so, so sad. The fact that I have nothing to wear tomorrow and the fact that I am not financially capable to buy clothes makes me more depressed. Not to mention that everyone in school has seen my clothes.</p>
<p>I really want to look chic every single day of my life. A la Audrey Hepburn in the movies. She never made a mistake. She had always looked divine. What is it about old movies? Their faces are poreless and their clothes are spectacular. Maybe that's the reason I adore watching old movies. Everyone is so chic and good looking.</p>
<p>Don't say that I have not tried saving up for clothes. I even have a "fashion fun". It's a old jar where I put a part of my allowance. But it seems that certain circumstances had forced me to collect that money. Every time I think about it, I wanna slap myself because I could have been wearing a new shirt, sporting new loafers, or even snuggling with a new cardigan. Sometimes, to be honest, I even fantasize of finding a bag of money on my commute home. And I just imagine myself shopping and buying clothes at whim. That fantasy always makes me sleep with smile on my face.</p>
<p>I need to satisfy my materialistic nature. Maybe it's about time I act like a spoiled brat. I was such an understanding child back then. Now, I do not really want toys. It's clothes that I want.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hoy un amigo me ha dado una lección. Tiene razón, más que un santo, y como sé que entra con cierta periodicidad a mi Blog a leer mis ocurrencias, a pesar de que nos vemos casi a diario, creo que merece que le reconozca el enorme mérito que tiene, no darme una lección (porque, como a todo ser humano, me las dan con frecuencia), sino hacerme reconocerlo públicamente.</p>
<p>El caso es que le chocó que el viernes pasado, día de mi puñetero 30 cumpleaños (que está haciendo correr ríos de tinta...antes, durante y después), que la única mención que hice al mundo, a través del blog, de ese día fue en referencia al nimio detalle de <a href="http://tinkerbell310.wordpress.com/2008/10/04/decepcion/" target="_blank">la decepción</a>, obviando todos los esfuerzos que mis compañeros, aquellos que me aprecian y para los que soy importante, en mayor o menor medida según los casos, realizaron ese día y toda la semana previa para hacerme feliz.</p>
<p>En vez de agradecer públicamente y para el universo vía Internet el detalle de esos compañeros, que se portaron estupendamente con sus regalos y las dedicatorias de una tarjeta de cumpleaños que guardaré siempre, sólo me quedé en la estupidez, en que una persona a la que no le importo y no debería de importarme se olvidó convenientemente de felicitarme. En vez de recordar a los 20 ó 30 que sí lo hicieron.</p>
<p>David, me has dado toda una lección, y no sólo con eso, sino también con lo de tener cuidado con levantar muros a mi alrededor, porque todo el mundo tiene problemas, sufre, llora, se angustia, tiene momentos de infelicidad, y para todos es más fácil si no levanto hormigón entre sus sentimientos y los míos. Eso sin olvidar que muchas veces las relaciones se cimentan sobre terrenos de arcilla, y los muros terminan hundiéndolas, porque nadie está dispuesto a lanzarse contra un muro eternamente. tarde o temprano, te cansas.</p>
<p>No sé si habré aprendido la lección o no, porque todos sabemos que el ser humano es el único animal que tropieza dos veces (o más) con la misma piedra pero, al menos, sé que me la has dado. Ahora está en mi mano aprender de ella o correr un "estúpido" velo en torno a la misma.</p>
<p>De paso aprovecho para darle las gracias a todos mis compis por su cariño y sus regalos, por tener el detalle conmigo a pesar de que este año no le había dicho a la gente que era mi cumpleaños, porque, precisamente por eso, aún tiene más valor. Además, los regalos demuestran que me conocen un poquito al menos, que me escuchan cuando hablo, porque, de lo contrario, no me habrían regalado mi película favorita ("Vacaciones en Roma" con una Audrey Hepburn jovencísima y encantadora <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jITw1fREQtQ" target="_blank">montada en Vespa</a>) y un CD de Serrat cantando a mi <a href="http://tinkerbell310.wordpress.com/poemario/" target="_blank">poeta</a> preferido, con permiso de Antonio Machado: Miguel Hernández. También me regalaron una "pashmina" preciosa, un collar (me encantan los complementos...) y algún que otro artículo de papelería de Jordi Labanda.</p>

<p>I am feeling a little bit anorexic today. It usually happens when I just had a super big meal or when I eat too much pastries (damn cookies and cupcakes I swear you will be the death of me). And I feel like my tummy just gained a couple of inches. You know I kinda have separation anxiety and looking fat while definitely be change.</p>
<p>You see, people know me as the scrawny one. I am very small and very very petite. Like, I can fit to a zero. And getting a tummy is kind of like a phobia for me. I have promised myself never to get fat. Never to let myself go. And so far, I am blessed with an active persona and a churning metabolism. But it runs in my family to be fat! I seriously am the only one below 100 pounds in my family. And I still plan to remain as is for the rest of my life. Kinda like Audrey Hepburn. It was said that her waistline never changed. She remained underweight until her death. She is my thinspiration!</p>

<description><![CDATA[Halloween is in the air as evidenced by my home decor.  Hubby and I love Halloween and each year we ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Halloween is in the air as evidenced by my home decor.  Hubby and I love Halloween and each year we host a party.  This year's theme is Alice in Wonderland with a dark twist.  Hubby is planning the outside decor with the help of a friend.  They have plans to set up a macabre tea party, a skeletal croquet game, headless playing cards, and of course the feel-good catepillar will be there.  The indoor decorations are left in my hands.  I am quite pleased with how everything looks this year.  Not all of the decor is Alice themed, but it is quite festive and eerie.<br />

This banner is new this year.  I found it at Target and just loved the script!</p>

We've had the tree and tombstones for a few years now.  The spiders are candles that were purchased at the <a href="http://www.spirithalloween.com">Spirit Halloween</a> store.  The candlesticks are new this year.  On the night of the party, we will spread a deck of cards out on the table as well.</p>

I am very proud of this flea market find.  Aren't these great!?</p>

I wanted to tell you about the tablecloth as well.  I bought an orange fall cloth tablecloth and simply covered it with a few yards of spiderweb fabric.  It looks wonderful and I'm sure you could use other sheer or lacy fabric.  The best part about this is after Halloween I simply remove the spider web fabric and add a fall centerpiece.  I am now ready for Thanksgiving.</p>

I am very pleased with the mantel this year.  I found the LED candlesticks at the <a href="http://www.spirithalloween.com">Spirit</a> store, the globes and flowers have been around for a spell, and the raven is a handmade silhouette on black cardstock.  It was placed under a plastic dome purchased at a thrift store.  The sticker on the orange jar candle can be found on <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/october-templates">Martha Stewart's website</a>.  Finally, the bat &#38; pumpkin lights were purchased a couple of years ago at Target.</p>

These aren't really a part of the decor just yet.  We plan to place the bottle on a round marble-topped table with a tag that says "drink me" and the candelabrum has a twin that will join it on another table with a chess set.  Right now, they are merely props waiting for their place and a really awesome picture.  By the way, does anyone know where I can find tiny tapered candles?</p>

These are neither eerie nor do they have anything to do with Alice in Wonderland, however, they are from my childhood.  My mom used to pull these out every year and my little sis and I had the honor of hanging them.  They still bring back warm, happy memories and will continue to be a part of my Halloween decorations for many years to come.  That about wraps things up for now.  I hope to have more pics as my hubby starts work on the outside and more halloween ideas throughout the month.  Do any of you have thoughts or ideas on Halloween?  Please share. En <em>La Reina Cristina</em>, película que se ha vuelto a ver durante estos años en París, el maquillaje tiene el espesor níveo de una máscara, no es un rostro pintado, sino un rostro enyesado, defendido por la superficie del color y no por sus líneas; en esa nieve a la vez frágil y compacta, los ojos solos, negros como una pulpa caprichosa y para nada expresivos, son dos cardenales un tanto temblorosos.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">      En su enorme belleza, ese rostro no dibujado sino más bien esculpido en la lisura y lo frágil, es decir, perfecto y efímero a la vez, incorpora la cara harinosa de Chaplin, sus ojos de vegetal sombrío, su rostro de tótem.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">      Pero la tentación de la máscara total (la máscara antigua, por ejemplo) tal vez implique menos el tema del secreto (caso de las semimáscaras italianas) que el de un arquetipo del rostro humano. La Garbo mostraba una especie de idea platónica de la criatura y esto explica que su rostro sea casi asexuado, sin que por ello resulte dudoso. Es cierto que la película (alternativamente, la reina Cristina es mujer y joven caballero) se presta a esa indivisión, pero allí la Garbo no realiza ninguna actuación de travesti: siempre es ella misma, sin fingir lleva bajo su corona o bajo sus grandes sombreros gachos el mismo rostro de nieve y soledad. Es indudable que su sobrenombre de <em>Divina</em> apuntaba menos a traducir un estado superlativo de la belleza que a la esencia de su persona corporal, descendida de un cielo donde las cosas se conforman y acaban con la mayor pureza. Ella lo sabía; cuántas actrices han consentido en dejar ver a la multitud la inquietante madurez de su belleza. Ella no: no era posible que la esencia se degradara, hacía falta que su rostro no tuviera jamás otra realidad que la de su perfección intelectual, más aún que plástica. Poco a poco, la Esencia se ha oscurecido, se ha cubierto progresivamente con anteojos, capellinas y exilios, pero jamás se ha alterado.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">      Sin embargo, en ese rostro deificado se dibuja algo más agudo que una máscara: una suerte de relación voluntaria y por lo tanto humana entre la curvatura de las fosas nasales y el arco ciliar, una función extraña, individual, entre dos zonas de la cara; la máscara no es más que una adición de líneas, el rostro es ante todo la recordación temática de unas a otras. <a href="http://alexpantarei.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/greta-garbo-21.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-255" title="greta-garbo-21" src="http://alexpantarei.wordpress.com/files/2008/09/greta-garbo-21.jpg" alt="" /></a>El rostro de la Garbo representa ese momento inestable en que el cine extrae una belleza existencial de una belleza esencial, cuando el arquetipo va a inflexionarse hacia la fascinación de figuras perecederas, cuando la claridad de las esencias carnales va a dar lugar a una lírica de la mujer.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">      Como momento de transición, el rostro de la Garbo concilia dos edades iconográficas, asegura el paso del terror al encanto. Como se sabe, hoy estamos en el otro polo de esa evolución: el rostro de Audrey Hepburn, por ejemplo, está individualizado, no sólo por su temática particular (mujer-niña, mujer-gata), sino también por su persona, por su especificación poco menos que única del rostro, que ya no tiene nada de esencial sino que está constituido por la complejidad infinita de las funciones morfológicas. Como lenguaje, la singularidad de la Garbo era de orden conceptual; la de Audrey Hepburn es de orden sustancial. El rostro de la Garbo es idea, el de la Hepburn es acontecimiento.</p>

<title><![CDATA[the eagle has landed]]></title>

<p><strong>Eagle Eye *** </strong>Produced by Spielberg and directed by D.J. Caruso, <em>Eagle Eye</em> is another attempt at re-imagining a classic Hitchcock film using Shia Leboeuf. The first attempt was <em>Disturbia</em>, also directed by Caruso and starring Leboeuf, an inferior stab at <em>Rear Window</em>. <em>Eagle Ey</em>e is slightly better than <em>Disturbia</em>, but still falls short when compared to Hitchcock's original, <em>The Man Who Knew Too Much</em>.</p>
<p>There is something missing in the first few minutes of <em>Eagle Eye</em> that would have made the film slightly more enjoyable from my point of view: notification of some sort that the film was set sometime in the future and was, in fact science fiction. There is large plot twist about halfway through that seemed incredibly out of place in a current day environment.</p>
<p>Discounting this error in judgment by the filmmakers, <em>Eagle Eye</em> is for most of its running time, a better than average thriller. Leboeuf continues to prove himself in one large film after another, handily carrying the film and covering for Michelle Monaghan's mediocre performance (I never once believed she was a mother). Despite some poorly edited action sequences, and some far-fetched plot lines, this one was worth the matinee price, and will be thoughtless fun on cable in a few years.</p>

<p><strong>Run Fat Boy, Run ***</strong> The first film from former Friends' star David Schwimmer starring Simon Pegg as a loser who finds some semblence of responsibility when he decides to run a marathon.</p>
<p>The film is funny in spots, and Pegg is perfect as the central character, but based on positive critical response, I was expecting more from this one. It's very by-the-numbers, and the heartfelt ending, though effective, can be seen from a mile away. Worth a rent.</p>

<p><strong>Fur **** </strong>Nicole Kidman as famed photographer Diane Arbus in this "surreal" biopic that infuses fact with fantasy. Robert Downey Jr. gives an effective turn as her neighbor with peculiarities (the main one being that he is covered with excessive hair from head to toe).</p>
<p>The film is a love story, but not in the traditional sense. Downey's character is a walking metaphor for Diane's growing desire to create art and ultimately separate from her family.  Not for the average moviegoer, Fur is an involving portrait of the birth of an artist.</p>

<p><strong>Wait Until Dark ****1/2 </strong>Audrey Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as a blind woman who is forced to deal with two theatrical crooks, and one sadistic killer (played to the hilt by a young Alan Arkin). This film has aged well and the suspense is surprisingly effective.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Es la noticia desde ayer en cualquier medio de comunicación, así que nada de lo que yo pueda decir será novedoso en lo más mínimo. Pero no importa porque, como buena cinéfila, me veo en la obligación moral de rendirle mi personal homenaje a Paul Newman. Porque algo hemos perdido todos los grandes aficionados al cine. Y, como dice El País: <a href="http://www.elpais.com/articulo/cultura/ojos/cine/azules/elpepucul/20080928elpepicul_1/Tes" target="_blank">"Los ojos del cine ya no son azules"</a>. Ya no tienen color y, probablemente, pasará mucho antes de volver a teñirse del mismo color del iris de cualquiera. Igual que perdió la elegancia aquel 20 de enero de 1993 cuando también un cáncer, aunque no de pulmón como el de Newman, devolvió a Audrey al Cielo, con el resto de los ángeles.</p>

<p>Con Newman se nos esfuma una de las últimas leyendas vivas que quedaban en Hollywood, de esas de cine en blanco y negro, o también en color por supuesto, cuyo carisma traspasaba la pantalla y nos fulminaba con esa mirada transparente, del color del cielo, que el mundo vió por primera vez en "Un largo y cálido verano", donde conoció a la mujer de su vida, la más afortunada de todas, la también actriz Joanne Woodward, con la que compartió 50 años de su vida...hasta ayer.</p>
<p>Para el recuerdo queda el Newman borracho y escayolado que despreciaba a una exhuberante Liz Taylor en "La gata sobre el tejado de zinc". El que intentaba escapar de una conspiración con tan sólo una toalla en medio de una sauna sueca antes de recibir "El Premio". El jovencito que sustituyó al malogrado Jamen Dean en "Marcado por el odio". O el que asesinaba a sangre fría y con un horno a un enemigo del capitalismo en una de mis películas preferidas de Hitchkock, "Cortina Rasgada". El que fue objeto de deseo de una madura Geraldine Page en "Dulce pájaro de juventud". Quien estafaba y engañaba con la ayuda de Robert Redford en "El Golpe". Maestro de un jovencito Tom Cruise en "El Color del Dinero" (Oscar al mejor actor), padre de Tom Hanks en "Camino a la Perdición", investigador privado en "Harper", jugador de Hockey en "El Castañazo"...y así hasta repasar toda su filmografía.</p>
<p>Se nos fue el último galán de Hollywood, sexy, chulesco, bellísimo...Grande.</p>
