A prévia do álbum The crying light, programado para 2009, me deixa dividido. De um lado, é bom saber que Antony Hegarty retorna mais inquieto que aborrecido (a melhor prova de que o sujeito anda uma pilha de nervos é Shake that devil, que parece um blues-rock do Morphine). De outro, as músicas mais novas (entre elas o primeiro single, Another world) repetem quase literalmente os temas e climas do disco anterior, batem na mesma tecla. De uma forma ou de outra, a tristeza não tem fim.

Furr | Blitzen Trapper | **

O sexteto de Portland talvez seja a melhor banda verdadeiramente derivada de Super Furry Animals. Nada errado nisso. Aqui eles provam mais uma vez a disposição de trafegar por praticamente todos os gêneros da música pop sem perder o bom humor. Lançado pela Sub Pop, Furr pode ser menos hiperativo e imprevisível que Wild mountain nation, mas soa tão aventureiro quanto. Se aproxima de um formato que podemos chamar de convencional - mas felizmente ainda não chega lá.

Acid tongue | Jenny Lewis | **

Se o primeiro álbum solo de Lewis, Rabbit fur coat, surpreendia por não contentar os fãs do Rilo Kiley com um típico projeto paralelo feijão-com-arroz (a menos que eles esperassem por uma ode ao gospel), o segundo coloca trata de arrumar as peças no tabuleiro. Acid tongue é nota 10 em comportamento, mais sortido e equilibrado, quase-quase uma Sheryl Crow. E com surtos de soft rock daqueles que encontramos na fase pop do Rilo Kiley (e tomamos como ironia, por falta de opção).

Lightbulbs | Fujiya & Miyagi | **

Quando somou um baterista à formação da banda, o Fujiya & Miyagi avisou que buscava uma sonoridade mais calorosa, mais "humana". É essa a chave para Lightbulbs. Ainda que o baterista não participe ainda de quase nada, já estamos diante de um álbum de carne e osso, mais para o pós-punk dançante do LCD Soundsystem que para qualquer gênero de eletrônica. A reverência obsessiva ao Kraftwerk começa a cansar, mas é um álbum tão modesto e direto, e com refrãos tão acessíveis, que fica difícil resistir.

For fans of Antony and The Johnsons, such as yours truly, it has been too damn long since he's put out some new music. Alas, the wait is over. Antony has returned with the Another World EP, released just a few days ago on the 7th of October. This should keep most of us satisfied until he releases The Crying Light, a full length album, in January of 2009.

I haven't picked it up for myself just yet, but some of the songs are getting favorable reviews over at Rate Your Music. At any rate, I just wanted to pass along a link to his latest video for the song "Another World," especially for people who've never listened to Antony or fans who did not know about the EP. To be honest, I couldn't much watch the video. What can I say? Interpretive dance is not my thing. But the song is quite beautiful and definitely worth checking out.

If you like what you hear, definitely surf around Antony's site. Or be brave and pick up one of his previous albums. Both are brilliant.

Lou Reed recorded the album Berlin, his third solo album, in 1973. It's an album that deals with themes of drug use and depression through the story of a doomed couple in Berlin. At the time of its release it was a let down for some because it was the follow up to the upbeat and glam rockTransformer, but with time, the album has come to be considered one of Reed's best.

In 2006, he performed Berlin live in its entirety at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. This was the first time the album had been played live and Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) captured the moment on film for this release. Lou Reed
preforms behind a background of images of Christine,  who is a charcter in the album, done by Schnabel.

Have you ever heard a song that speaks to you in such a way that it seems improper to ever stop listening to it? Most of the songs that fall into this category are very familar ones like Michael Hurley's "Tea Song", COB's "Let it Be You", Antony and the Johnsons' "Hope There's Someone" and the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb." This is why it is so wonderful to hear a friend's band record a song that speaks to me in such an intimate manner. There are certain songs in one's life that feel more like companions instead of a collection of notes and chords and it goes beyond your ears and settles in a heart where thousands will never tread. There is a song on the Wrist and Pistols' Wristopolis that will remain in constant rotation until the day I shuffle my scruffy coil.

The song in question is cover of the folk standard "Willie o' Winsbury"  Meg Baird of the Espers makes a guest appearance here and adds a grace that perfectly suits this ode to fairness and chivalry. The ballad details a situation where a king wants to hang his servant for getting his daughter pregnant. He rethinks this path when meeting the servant and realized he is a good match and allows them to run off and elope. The imagery of this song sticks with me because the daughter is ordered to strip naked before her father to discern her physical state while he slowly becomes dejected at the revelation it was no lord, duke or night, but a servant who has impregnated his child. He immediately calls for the man to be hanged, but reconsiders his decision once he lays eyes on this handsome gent clad with a blonde mane clad in red silk. His appearance and demeanor disarms him to the point that he realizes that he is man worthy of his daughter's hand. It's a fairy tale about the power of love. Her version in her debut album is wonderful, but this version captures the simple romanticism that the song deserves. It shouldn't be produced, it should humble and rough.

My appreciation for this album may be colored by my friendship with many of the involved parties, but my musical judgment tells me that it's pretty great no matter who was involved. Wrist and Pistols are an offshoot of the Lucky Dragons and count Brendan Greaves, Pablo Colapinto and William Pym as its members. Part if its charm is derived from living next doo from their practice space where I heard multiple red-hot messes progress to sketches and bloom into song. Plus, there was the occasion where I waltzed in unannounced to convince them that a song should be written from the perspective of a stern disciplinarian. However, that was just another in a traffic jam of bad ideas fueled by a few too many beers. The rest of Wristopolis is great as well. Friendly folks exploring their folksy loves. I won't lie. That one song eclipses the rest, but it is a gross oversight to ignore the rest of this album.

O álbum que sucede a I Am a Bird Now chega no início do próximo ano. Entretanto, já durante este mês, sairá o EP com o título deste tema. Só há voz e piano; o vídeo veste a tranquilidade da música. Para quem espera ansiosamente por The Crying Light, saberia sempre a pouco.

Deep in the bowels of London’s notorious Koko Hercules And Love Affair ringmaster  and New York DJ Andy Butler is riffing on the bands ethos and the success of their eponymous debut album which features divine vocal contributions from Antony Hegarty.. 2008 has been a year spent filling dance floors across the world, watching the number of bodies flailing and gyrating to the electro pulse aural sexscapades of tracks such as ‘Blind’ and ‘You Belong’ grow with each passing show.  Hercules & Love Affair have already rocked the capital with a set at the Wireless Festival and will be returning to play the O2 Arena in November as they bid to keep the party rolling all year.

The last time you were here was Wireless, how was that for you and what have you been up to in the meantime?

Wireless was actually a really fun festival for us. I mean the numbers were a little small at first and we felt “Where is everybody?” But we put on a really good show I think and it was really well run. It was one of the more pleasant UK festival experiences we’ve had.

You’re finishing off with Bestival. As far as shows go do you enjoy the festival scene or do you prefer club shows?

Well you know I love the vibe of a club show. It’s nice to roll into town and know that tonight we’re the only band on stage and we can have a long soundtrack and can really make it our night. But festivals have really grown on me and I actually really enjoy some of the afternoon casual sort of festivals. Like we did a new one called the Beachdown Festival in Brighton this year and we played at like 4 in the afternoon and we put on a really good show and there were loads of kids there. Also we recently did one in Ireland and that was loads of people in the afternoon again, like 5 in the afternoon and  there’s just something really nice about playing early in the day, so you still have your evening and  you have the casual vibe which is fun. So we’ve just been doing tons and tons of festivals and tons and tons of club dates.

Yeah because the first tour was in March wasn’t it so you’ve pretty much been constant since then?

Yeah, I mean we’ve had a week here or a week there but it’s pretty much been constant.

So when you play festivals obviously you will have people there who haven’t heard Hercules… at all, so what do you hope a Hercules virgin would take away from your show?

I hope that they take away… well you know I don’t want them to be totally stuck in the spectacle of it all. I quite like the idea that they could be able to retreat into themselves and really enjoy the music. But I think that’s something that a fan would be more likely to do. In general for a new person who has never heard or seen us I hope that they are able to see that there is a pretty special thing happening on stage with 8 different people, like a magical kind of thing, you know, like a synergy. And I hope that that energy that we create amongst ourselves on stage really resonates with the viewer or whoever. I hope they walk away thinking, “wow 8 people were playing dance music on stage just now!…and it was like a machine and it was really tight and they knew what they were doing, it kind of felt like a journey,” or something, I think that’s really the goal. So it feels kind of like a journey for people.

Cool, so obviously you are now a large group with the live band that you have and I read a quote that said you were, “representing the bohemian New York that we all dream about.” So I was going to ask you what the actual reality of being from New York at the moment? What’s it like to be a band or an artist there, because it was portrayed that you represented kind of a Warholian utopia, is that a reality?

Well you know we as a group, all 8 of us, are very serious about what we do, you know. We’re 8 passionate people who are playing music together and whether or not there’s this scene, I mean there’s not this one nightclub that we are all going to where we all cross paths, this is not the case, there’s no scene like this in New York, I mean there’s no bohemia. There is no bohemia in New York, it’s true you know it’s just romantic and it’s nice that we represent that but the truth is that we’re all just people who have a really intense and sincere relationship to music and coming together to collaborate on this project, I’m sorry it doesn’t sound more romantic.

That’s not a problem.

Well no, but I mean in general I’m saying to people who really perceive us that way we’re people who came together because we really like music more than anything,

Cool, because I was wondering if more than you coming together because there was a huge scene or community it was more a case of you being drawn together as a reaction against the fact that there wasn’t when you were getting together?

That is exactly what it was, and I think that is a good way of putting it. You know, because I’ve been in New York for years and there wasn’t a place to go dance and what did I end up doing? I ended up making there be a place, or creating a place. You know the nightclub situation was really rotten at one point and we just threw our hands in the air and it was like “well I guess we have to throw a party! I guess we have to do this because it’s just not happening.” So I think this is something similar that happened with Hercules & Love Affair, there was sort  of a vacancy or something missing or something not happening you know and it’s a case of us just trying to create something for us, and then people come into it.

Because there’s two perceptions of it at the moment, there is kind of that romantic notion that it’s this artists paradise and it’s like Berlin and there are so many creative people there and so much happening all at once, but then there’s also that , admittedly cliched, perception of the post 9/11 kind of clean up New York crack down , the “we don’t want it to be a party town” kind of vibe.

No, it’s not, it’s not a party town . I always say it’s an island of commerce and it feels much more like…in some ways I feel like New York is more suburban than Cincinnati, Ohio. So I feel that way sometimes and I think maybe there’s something interesting and edgy happening in a small town in America, because in New York it really feels just like shoppers and bankers and doctors and that’s cool, but it’s not a terribly hospitable place to artists anymore, I mean it’s a very expensive place.

Ok, so leaving New York. With the album and the singles, like ‘Blind’ you’ve got quite a lot of critical acclaim, especially in the UK, how do you deal with that, how aware are you even of it and how do you process that? Because for some bands it’s almost a poison chalice to get that kind of reaction. The obvious example right now being Black Kids who must have recorded the best demo in history to produce the hysteria they did and then people have seen them live with unattainable expectations and there’s already a huge backlash in the media. So how do you deal with expectation and pressure?

(Sighs) You know I am aware or it, totally, I’m not going to lie, and partly I am aware of it because, really because I want to be to a degree, but then also because I have people sending me along clips and clips and clips. But in terms of pressure and expectations its more like, well going on the road with this live act, a new band that had never played any live shows and playing in front of thousands of people there was all of this hype and there were these reviews, and there was also all of this expectations because of the question of Antony (Hegarty - Antony and The Johnsons front man) participating but it got the point where we had all this pressure but we had to just go and do something. But to a point I dismiss journalism, because initially you know I didn’t write the record for a journalist .

Did you always view Hercules & Love Affair as a live concern?

I never viewed Hercules as a live band, it was just another way for me to record music and release music and then it became less simple and records got involved and all of this crap happened and then there was touring and everything you know. But if I trace it all back and say ok so where did it all start it was never written for, the music was never written just so someone would have something else to write about in a magazine.

So what’s the next step for Hercules?

Well we have an American tour coming up in October, and I’m just doing production stuff.

Ok, so in terms of new music is that something that’s underway or that you’ll think about next year?

Well I’ve actually already got new material and we’re playing it in our live show, and I’ve been asked to do a couple of really special things, like right now I’m in the process of writing music for Chanel for this big event that they are having. So, yeah the creative juices have definitely been flowing.

…and in terms of new music are you envisaging working with Antony again, or was that purely a first album thing and are there any other artists who you might like to work with in a similar role in the future?

Yeah, I mean Antony was extremely generous and just around a lot, but he has an EP coming out in October and then an album in January. So, I mean, I went into this knowing that it was going to turn into like a Massive Attack thing where we could invite singers in and be a constantly changing face, where the look and the voices are constantly changing. So yeah I am interested in exploring a couple of things, and interested in exploring more different emotional places that I don’t feel I tapped into at all on the first record, because I was in a very different headspace, and using different voices male and female to do that. I don’t really have any names in mind, I mean there are still people I dream of working with….. There are some things in the ether. (Smiles)

Ok so just to finish off then. As such a new live band and you’re just exploring playing together how have the songs changed over the course of the tour?

Yea, they have definitely changed, I mean because certain instrumentation we just don’t have so some of the string parts are played as horn parts and some of the string parts are played as key parts so definitely the arrangements have changed and people have been swapping instruments to fit the new arrangements. But the other thing is also that the tempo of the whole thing has been totally picked up. The record is pretty easy to listen to in the car or at home and it’s all like between 105 and 95bpm so we round it all up to about 120bpm and it’s just a bigger dance party.

So looking at your influences you cite the muppets...favourite?

Oh Miss Piggy, that will never change. She’s my favourite.

Did you see Avenue Q?

Yea, you know it hurt my feelings. I thought it was funny but it hurt my feelings. It was a little sacrilegious to me. (Flashes faux outrage) I was a little bit offended by it…

…you’re laughing as you say that…

Ha, I am. Like I totally enjoyed it but afterwards I was like, you know what, you don’t even go for the muppets. Just don’t go for the muppets!

"It is pain to live in fear" - сказал андроид Леон, перед тем как ему прострелили голову. Бегущий, на мой взгляд - лучший фильм о смерти и жизни. Советую обязательно посмотреть, если вы ещё не видели.

        Tras el éxito rotundo -de crítica y público- obtenido con I'm a Bird Now en el 2005, parece que aún habrá que esperar hasta Enero del año que viene para escuchar por completo el próximo trabajo de Antony and the Johnsons.

        Hasta entonces nos quedaremos con el EP, adelanto de su tercer disco The Crying Light, que verá la luz el próximo 7 de Octubre y que, manteniéndose dentro de su estilo melancólico e intimista, lleva por nombre Another World.

Antony e sua banda (os Johnsons) têm até o momento só dois álbuns, sendo que esse mês vai ser lançado o EP "Another World" como prévia de um novo disco. Para falar a verdade, suas músicas não me agradaram muito. Minha primeira impressão foi de que estava ouvindo um coral gospel. Entretanto, como nem toda primeira impressão é a que fica, até que estou me acostumando - aos poucos - ao seu som melodramático e à sua voz trêmula.

O segundo trabalho de Hegarty, "I Am A Bird Now", foi o que eu mais apreciei até agora. Pode ser por causa das melodias menos dramáticas e o uso de diversos instrumentos (muito piano, um saxofone aqui e uma guitarra acolá). Nele você talvez reconheça as participações especiais do próprio Boy George (não foi só o visual que fez de Antony um fã), Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright e o esquisitinho metido a hippie-tropicália Devendra Banhart (abre parênteses: ele terminou o namoro com Natalie Portman, ainda bem; fecha parênteses).

Antony também foi chamado para cantar em músicas de outras pessoas, tais como Björk, as irmãs CocoRosie e sua pupila Joan Wasser.

The video for the new Antony and the Johnsons' single "Another World" has finally been released. Its taken off his forthcoming EP of the same name, which will be released next week on Oct 7th. The video is directed by Colin Whitaker. Sort of like a companion piece to "Hope There's Someone," this song deals with all the earthly things he'll miss in the new world to hypnotic effect.

The EP, which consists of 5 songs and is a teaser for his first full-length album in many years The Crying Light which comes out on Secretly Canadian in Jan 2009.

We'd Netflixed I'm Your Man, the documentary about singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen.  An amazing array of artists performed Cohen's songs, but one artist stood out - Antony and The Johnsons.  He had all the stage presence of Joe Cocker wearing a woman's jogging suit, but his voice was sublime.  Who was this angeI?  I immediately Googled him and ordered several CD's off his website, which arrived none too soon. I found them so haunting, I've been playing them ever since. 

Although he lives in New York, Antony performs mostly in Europe.  So I was ecstatic when my husband called to tell me he'd just heard Antony and The Johnsons were performing at Disney Hall with the LA Philharmonic on Oct. 14th.  This is being billed as his only West Coast appearance.

The last time we actually paid to go see a LIVE act was several years ago when we saw Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance at the Wiltern.  I'm not big on shelling out big bucks for live shows, but Antony is THE exception. Okay, I admit. I still curse the gods that my friend Martha scored a ticket to see Muse, my second favorite band in the universe. 

Antony's X and Y chromosomes are aligned differently than yours or mine. He could possibly be the only person on the planet with a Z chromosome, but who cares?  His voice, a wilting passionate vibrato that alternates with a falsetto, can raise the hairs on your neck.

Antony has a cult following (Rufus Wainwright and Lou Reed perform on his latest album, and he did an cover of John Lennon's Happy Christmas (War is Over) with Boy George).  Now that's one cult I'm happy to claim membership in!  Some of Antony's songs are painful to listen to, so be forewarned - much of his repertoire is not G-rated, but this song is.  To me, he has the voice of an angel.  

As you know, Antony and the Johnsons will be coming forth with a new long awaited E.P. titled "Another world". I guess you can call me lucky since Someone out there knows I love Antony and gave me the E.P in its entirety early. They also Gave me "The great white ocean" track from the Prada "fallen Shadow" video along with it. Boy do I feel special!!! Thanks for the love!!!

Although I have the E.P, I won't pimp it out, Out of respect for  Antony (and fear of having his label breathing down my throat). So Since I can't give you the E.P, I can show you the teaser trailer that's for the release or "Another world" that has been floating around for a week or so. On October 7th, Antony and the Johnsons will release "Another World" EP on cd and vinyl. Below is the press release:

"Antony and the Johnsons emerged onto the international stage in 2005 with their breakthrough I Am A Bird Now. The group were awarded the Mercury Prize in the UK and toured the world. Since then Antony has participated on tracks with Bjork on her latest album "Volta", appeared in the Leonard Cohen documentary "I'm Your Man", featured as vocalist with disco act Hercules and Love Affair, recorded for the Todd Haynes bio epic of Bob Dylan "I'm Not There", and collaborated with Charles Atlas on a European tour of their stage spectacle "TURNING".

Now Antony and the Johnsons have emerged with a new album, ‘The Crying Light’ which will be released January 21st 2009. "Another World" is the first single, and it will be released as part of the five-song Another World EP which is being released on October 7th.

On "Another World", Antony sings of a disappearing world. The EP also includes "Shake That Devil". Part exorcism and part Shangri La, Antony calls out shape-shifting perpetrators and banishes them one by one. Two other songs, "Crackagen" and "Sing For Me" are pastoral and surreal. Finally the epic "Hope Mountain" closes the EP, an episodic narrative set after a flood; people gather on a mountain to witness the emergence of a luminous girl.
