Four Seasons, The: A Novel of Vivaldi’s Venice by Laurel Corona

Four Seasons, The: A Novel of Vivaldi's Venice by Laurel Corona

Earlier this year I read and reviewed The Venetian Mask by Rosalind Laker. I enjoyed learning about Venetian history and about the Pieta specifically. So, when I was offered the opportunity to read The Four Seasons, a novel about the Pieta and Venice during the time of Antonio Vivaldi, I jumped at the chance. This novel tells the story of two sisters, Maddalena and Chiaretta, who were left anonymously at the Pieta by the mother who could not care for them both. She may have been a courtesan because she left them with the money needed to keep them together through Chiaretta’s infancy. As they grew, their talents led them to different destinies. Chiaretta beauty and outstanding singing voice led her to fame and marriage. Maddalena's quiet nature and inborn love for the violin and its music were what attracted Vivaldi's attention.

The relationship between these sisters was close and loving. It was as if when they were branded with the letter “P” on the bottom of their feet together that their hearts were seared together. The most beautiful scenes in this book are when they fight for each other. Each season of their lives brought them closer together. That they would gladly take on the world for each other was always apparent. What was somewhat disappointing was that there wasn’t a compelling reason for them to fight.

I enjoy a strong heroine, but I love her best when she is pitted against a worthy adversary. This villain never made an appearance in The Four Seasons. While Maddalena and Chiaretta wrote back and forth about how one violin tutor was the devil, she didn’t ever do anything to either of the sisters to invite such wrath. Their name calling felt more like children being children than a statement of fact. Vivaldi was to impotent and pitiful for me to fully grasp Maddalena’s connection to him after he first left her without a word. Perhaps what I needed to truly bring this to life was an intrinsic love for music that Maddalena Rossa did. Even as someone without a note of musical talent in my body, I could sense the author’s love for music as she painted the pictures of Vivaldi and his must together working on his compositions. While I appreciate that it does for the characters and is beautifully written, it was off in the distance for me. Perhaps if I was there in the room with them I would have sensed the danger that always lingered between the two of them. Ultimately, Anna Giraud showed up too late to be the nemesis I longed for.

Venice is a city with almost a split personality. On one hand, you have city’s religious life. The Roman Catholic Church and its institutions played a large roll in the city and its citizens. On the other hand, there are the masks, the courtesans, and the night life. So long as the person was discrete, no harm was done either socially or, so it seems, spiritually. Corona captures this best in this novel when Maddalena barely blinks an eye when she discovers the type of life that Chiaretta leads after her marriage. This seems to be part of the reason why the Pieta and three other ospedali came into existence.

Despite lacking drama, I enjoyed reading The Four Seasons from start to finish. The love story between Maddalena and Chiaretta is beautiful. It also reignited my desire to read more about Venice. I absolutely love the flavor that city had in the 17th and 18th centuries. I will most definitely be looking for other novels about this city, especially those that focus on the lives of those outside of the Pieta’s walls. This reviewer is ready to read about how those ospedali were filled.

The Four Seasons will be published by Hyperion in November, 2008.

Okay, so spring is technically over a month old, but the Upper-Mid-West, or Western-Northeast, or whatever you call the region where I currently reside, was slow to get the memo. We crawled gingerly out of our winter funk, only to get a coupla final cold blasts in our faces. But we persevere, and the daytime highs are trending upwards, notwithstanding a few minor ripples. Lots of pretty spring colors are busting out on the trees and bushes too -- the scenery looks a little different each day.

I've been needing something to jump-start me out of winter hibernation mode -- an extra cup of morning coffee is helpful, but not quite enough -- so I've signed myself up with NaBloPoMo, or National Blog Posting Month. My mission is simple:

Post every day for a month. That's all you have to do.

Heck, I can do that! As regular readers know, I've done it before! And this time I'm not even technically required to write a piece of music each day, though I bet some composing will sneak in along the way.

To kick things off, I decided to look into music associated with May Day, since today is, um, May Day! :P The day has multiple associations, ranging from serious to silly. Well, okay, the silly aspect will be supplied by me -- I've got a reputation to uphold, y'know! ;)

We might as well start at the very beginning -- the urge to welcome spring with open arms is certainly nothing new! Here's the perfect tune for dancing 'round the Maypole:

"Sumer Is Icumen In"

Clicke Yon Master Readmore to Continue the Merrie Frolickinge!

BTW, "Sumer Is Icumen In" is an oft-cited example of early polyphony -- at some point, people figured out that it sounds really cool to have more than one line of music being sung simultaneously. This is a pretty simple form of what we call a "round" -- think "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

Actually, I'm sure that, like spring celebrations, polyphony started even earlier than the mid-13th century -- but it's all a question of documentation!

A couple more examples from Merrie Olde England...

Via Broadway & Hollywood: "The Lusty Month of May" from Camelot

(WARNING: I cannot be held responsible for the cheesiness contained herein -- it's Broadway, and Hollywood, and it was the '60's -- you do the math! :P )

Finally, here's a CD to pop in your car stereo on the way to your local Renaissance Faire:

O Lusty May: Renaissance Songs of Spring :P

On the more serious side, for many people, today is an ethnic and/or religious holiday known as Beltane. Here's a modern tribute to this ancient festival:

Loreena McKennitt: "Huron 'Beltane' Fire Dance"

In quarters where "Labor" is not considered a bad word, May Day is also known as International Workers' Day. Here's a version of The Internationale, with updated English words by Billy Bragg. It's controversial and provocative, so view at your own risk:

Here's what struck me about it: I really can't find much to disagree with in the words themselves -- how sad that the movements associated with the song have spawned tyrannies of their own. Oh, that pesky human nature!

Still, before we bash organized labor, let us pause to remember, with fond nostalgia, the 40-hour work week and the living wage. :P

Of course, I'd lose my Classical Musician card if I didn't cover the following bases:

Music to Start a Riot With:
Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring

And Music for Calming Down Afterwards:
Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring

And Then, This Goes Without Saying:
Antonio Vivaldi: Spring, from The Four Seasons

Okay, that's enough... it's a beautiful day -- go outside, before summer really kicks in and it's too darn hot!

Something a little different this time. The other day I was Goodwill looking for old NES games. They had Mega Man 2 the last time I was there and I should've bought it because it was gone when I went back. I turned my attention to the vinyl in stock, which was admittedly slim pickings. Someone must have recently been in the store and unloaded a bunch of classical music vinyl because that's mostly what they had. On a whim, I picked out a few records featuring the music of the big name composers, including Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. This recording by the thirteen string ensemble Societa Corelli was released in 1960.

I had heard The Four Seasons many times before, but never on vinyl. Listening to the record through my headphones with the pops and cracks gives the recording a life of it's own. It's hard to describe really. I couldn't help but get goosebumps during the climaxes of the "Summer" and "Winter" movements especially. It actually reminded me of all the commercials I've seen with the Four Seasons, and now I feel disappointed at how such a beautiful piece of music could be trivialized like that.

Inspired by my newfound appreciation of this work, I downloaded a different recording to put on my iPod. At first listen, I felt as though it didn't elicit the same emotions as the vinyl recording did, and it's not because it was a different ensemble playing the work. My advice to you is to find this on vinyl and hear the difference yourself. Also, check out these videos below combining the Four Seasons with cool sand animation.

Marka. Nadarjenega, a bolehnega dečka (mučila ga je astma) so poslali v bogoslovje, saj je cerkvena kariera v tistih časih pomenila skoraj edino možnost za izobrazbo in družbeni vzpon nadarjenih, a revnih mladih ljudi. Vivaldi je hkrati z bogoslovjem temeljito študiral violino in druge glasbene spretnosti.

Štirje Vivaldijevi koncerti posvečeni letnim časom, so izšli leta 1725 v zbirki Il cimento dell’armonia e invenzione v Amsterdamu. Štirje letni časi so najuspešnejša in največkrat poslušana programska glasba v celotni glasbeni zgodovini.

Nato solist v elegantnih pasažah pripravi ponovni nastop prve teme: vsa narava slavi prihod pomladi.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntMzK0VLMAo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nx4B0hUbs8

V zadnjem stavku se nimfe in pastirji pod bleščečim jasnim nebom zavrtijo v vesel ples ob zvokih pastirskih piščali.

Tuesday, March 4th is more than just Antonio Vivaldi's 330th birthday and my half-birthday, ladies and gentlemen. It is, apparently, National Grammar Day. From the website:

"We believe language is something to be celebrated. March 4th is the perfect day to do it. It's not only a date, it's an imperative. So March forth on March 4th! Celebrate your mother tongue!

Also, there's already a National Punctuation Day, and it didn't seem fair to leave clauses and such things by the wayside when the commas that embrace them get such attention."

The thing that I love about this day that I've just discovered, other than having cause to celebrate one of the nerdy things I enjoy on my half birthday, is the name of the organization behind it: SPOGG. The Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. Join here. You'll be glad you did.

In other news, I wish I had a motorcycle, and that it was warm enough to drive one up and down Lakeshore Drive. That would be perfect. Speaking of which:

My theoretical bike would have to be that shiny.

Vivaldi’s Virgins
By Barbara Quick
HarperCollins
July 2007

Reviewed by Terez Rose

In the early eighteenth century, Venice was a bustling, exotic city-state, thriving with trade and art, with no less than four public institutions for the housing and upkeep of the city’s less favored population. The Ospdale della Pietà, an orphanage of sorts for foundling and unwanted children, is the setting, then, for Barbara Quick’s Vivaldi’s Virgins. Anna Maria dal Violin—orphans are given a last name according to their instrument of skill—is plucked from the commun at an early age to join the figlie di coro, an elite group of performers under the direction of maestro Antonio Vivaldi, nicknamed the “Red Priest” for the color of his hair and the vocation he neglects in favor of composing. The virgins in question are his all-female musicians, cloistered within the Pietà’s walls, obscured from public view even when performing.

The story is less about Vivaldi and the violin, however, and more about an adolescent’s search for self, for clues about the mother she never knew. Encouraged by Sister Laura, a cloistered nun and friend, to write letters to this absent mother, Anna Maria pours her questions, thoughts and hopes into missives that punctuate the story and set its poignant tone.

There is a lot to like here: the writing is elegant and flows well; descriptions of Venetian society are detailed and evocative. Music is presented in a light, poetic fashion that will please readers whose classical music tastes run along the lines of Pachelbel’s “Canon in D,” Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” and Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.”

Anna Maria, based on a real life violin virtuoso to whom Vivaldi dedicated thirty-seven compositions, is a spirited sort. Sneaking out with a friend to attend an opera; secreted by Vivaldi to a nobleman’s masked ball at his palazzo; escaping to attend a celebration in the Jewish Ghetto—these events bring adventure to her life, but continually land her in trouble. Her ensuing punishments demonstrate well the confining nature of life within the Pietà’s walls and the institutionalized element that defines Anna Maria’s world.

During one such punishment, Anna Maria comments in a letter to her mother that “I’ve come to believe that music is the one companion, the one teacher, the one parent, the one friend who will never abandon me.” In musings such as these, Quick has aptly captured the saving grace of music that serves as a religion of sorts for many of us. For the violin-savvy reader seeking insight into the life and mind of a virtuoso, however, this story dishes up thin fare. We’re told Anna Maria is a violin prodigy, how she works hard in trying to memorize and play Vivaldi’s challenging music. We hear that the coro “played very well,” and that “I played for my teacher, just as skillfully, just as beautifully, as I was able.” But what we’re missing are the details.

An aside here, if I might. The violin is not the piano—you don’t just learn notes, plunk them out with the keys and then spend the rest of the time practicing till the music flows smoothly from your finger. Fretless instruments allow infinite opportunities to subtly vary intonation—both a challenge and an opportunity violinists can spend their entire lives trying to master, necessitating hours of daily scales, arpeggios and etudes before passage work can even begin. A violinist’s relationship with this temperamental instrument is intense and enduring—both the violinist’s best friend and her harshest taskmaster. No player is unaffected by the beauty of the instrument, its glowing surface and shape, much like the body of a woman—surely of note to the lonely, motherless Anna Maria. Greater description and detail here, along these lines, would have gone a long way indeed.

What the reader does get are Anna Maria’s feelings when playing, which are lyrically, if vaguely expressed. “The first movements went beautifully well, with notes yielding, sweetening as my fingers found their hiding places and called them into the air. They followed my bow as if I were the leader of a great army of musician warriors: I made them sing.”

Singing, and the broader subject of music in general, is where Quick seems to hone in more successfully on description. One wonderfully depicted event that demonstrates both music and the ribald pageantry of Venice takes place inside the Teatro Sant’ Angelo, which Anna Maria’s friend has dragged her out to attend. There, they encounter both nobility and working class alike, in silks and rain-soaked woolens respectively, all faces covered by the masks Venetians favored in public during the long season of Carnival. The two girls take seats and observe, gape-mouthed, as the drama plays out, both onstage and off—high entertainment for the reader as well.

Later, the ensuing nighttime gondola ride back to the Pietà allows Anna Maria to revel at more natural wonders: “The sky on a clear night is a living, pulsating thing. The stars are like musical notes turned to light, and, like notes, they shimmer and swell and fade and fall.”

Like these stars, Vivaldi’s Virgins has a vivid, affecting trajectory, swelling perhaps a bit too early, but subsiding elegantly to produce a satisfying, heart-warming read. Recommended for fans of Anita Dunant’s In the Company of the Courtesan who seek a milder, more sentimental touch, with a dollop of classical music thrown in for sweetness.
