So The FMX has come and gone, i spoke to a ton of studios, and quite a few were very positive and i got some promising leads..however now i'm in the horrible zone of waiting for them to contact me *dun dun dun*

Its a terrible quiet sort of hell, every refresh of my empty inbox is another twist of the knife and every spam email a cruel glimmer of hope before having my head dunked under water again :P

So to try and escape this madness i did what any sane man would do.

I went to Paris :)

Admitedly i was invited to go to my friend Nick's Dads Wedding..but i took advantage of the jobless situation and stayed on afterwards for a bit, in fact this is being written in his living room...so authentic!

Here are my thousands of words

Thats the place in the country where we stayed..well not actually stayed as we were in another house which is behind me in this photo. The weather was unbelievable! Perfect temperature, sunny, little refreshing breeze, everything in full bloom and birds twittering around..it was magical. We went on a nice relaxed bike ride at one point and it was just so idyllic and perfect it was hard to believe..the sun beaming in through the lush vegetation all around us...absolutely incredible.

This next photo has nothing to do with me actually, its just a pic i snapped at the wedding...and i think its pretty great lol...now those of you who know me, know that i'm not exactly a "baby" person..but this kid was pretty hilarious..and also scarily silent..heheh it is pretty cute....but NO i maintain my hardline stance against babies damnit!! :P

here's a pic of me and Nick after having decorated the wedding car (with only minimal help from stephane really hohoho)

the three of us. Me, Nick and Stephane

Me staring off into space

A lovely cat that was in the country and came and sat on my lap..we had a long snuggle *A_A*

And some amazing God rays as seen from nicks balcony :)

As usual you can click on an image to see it larger..there are plenty more..including some rooms filled with skeletons and mutated heads (no seriously) and stuff like that..but i'll put them in a new post later on as i have to go off and be Parisien now :)

If you stay at Khao Yai National Park overnight, you'll know that tents and bungalows come with a complementary alarm clock - screeching Gibbons!

What may be an incomprehensible racket of howling and hooting to sleepy park visitors is actually one of the most complicated animal communications in nature.

Researchers have only recently become aware of how Gibbon calls can function as detailed warnings of danger, not just romantic serenades.

Scientists from as far away as Scotland and Germany have come to Khao Yai to study the musical calls of these tree dwelling apes, discovering that Gibbons switch the order of sounds to alter the meaning of their songs.

Gibbon songs vary so dramatically, their range was compared to that between 'gangsta rap' and 'sappy pop' music by MSNBC journalist Jasmin Aline Persch in her article Low-profile singers of the animal world.

Khao Yai is home to two species of gibbon, the White-handed or Lar gibbon and the rarer Pileated Gibbon. In a small area these two species even hybridize naturally, one of only three such gibbon hybridization zones in the world.

The European eel slithers its way more than 3,400 miles downstream to the ocean to spawn — but

The European eel slithers its way more than 3,400 miles downstream to the ocean to spawn -- but cadmium accumulated upriver may make the voyage fruitless for the highly endangered species.

So finds a new study by researchers at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Arcachon, France who exposed eels to cadmium in the laboratory and found that although the eggs of cadmium-exposed eels initially matured faster in the ovaries, the eggs -- and the eels -- were more likely to die than unexposed eels.

"They show that a moderate cadmium concentration is already almost lethal to the eel," said Willem Dekker of Wageningen IMARES, a marine research institute in IJmuiden in the Netherlands, who was not involved in the new study.

The cadmium levels found in eel tissues in the experiment were less than those in eels captured from the Gironde estuary in southwest France. Even at these lower concentrations, four of eight cadmium-exposed eels died in the last three weeks of the experiment, while none of the unexposed eels died in that period.

European eel populations have declined sharply since the 1980s, with only 10 percent surviving each generation, and an overall dropoff of up to 99 per cent since the 1960s, Dekker said.

Cadmium exposure is certainly not the only cause of this decline, the researchers noted. Overfishing, contamination from other pollutants, and hydropower stations that act like "meat grinders" to migrating eels also pose threats, Dekker said.

The eels have a four-stage life cycle, which contributes to their susceptibility to cadmium, the researchers say. In the first stage, larvae drift toward the European coasts after hatching in the Sargasso Sea. The larvae morph into glass eels, a transparent form, which enter rivers and begin to move upstream.

The glass eels (a delicacy that currently fetches about $1,000 per kilogram) then develop into juvenile yellow eels. These can live for 10 to 20 years in rivers and streams, storing fat for their 3,400-mile migration back to the Sargasso Sea, during which they do not eat.

Terri Irwin said the 135,000-hectare (333,450-acre) Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on Cape York Peninsula in Australia's far northeast was home to a number of vulnerable species and needed to be protected.

The lease to the site, purchased by an Irwin family company with the help of the Australian government in 2006 and renamed in tribute to the "Croc Hunter", is the subject of an application from a mining company to mine 50 million tonnes of bauxite, she said.

Terri Irwin, who is the mother of Irwin's two children Bindi, nine, and Bob, four, said she would take the legal fight as far as possible.

"Setting aside this land will not break the bank for (mining company) Cape Alumina, and yet it would make such a huge difference environmentally," she told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Irwin said the reserve was home to a number of rare plant and animal species.

There is a path that leads to the rear of the garden and who else to greet you at the beginning of the path but a small puppy I call Teddy. He is the perfect one to greet all who come for a visit to the little getaway garden. The garden itself showcases all the beautiful flowers that have bloomed and of course the bright green grass which is like walking on cotton. Last but not least in the rear left corner there is even a miniature cupcake garden for all those who need a quick little snack as they enjoy their getaway in the whimisical garden.

I love creating cakes that tell a story and this one surely does. The grass on the cake was created with using buttercream icing, the angel girl, animals, bugs and flowers were all hand made using fondant.

This is my first drawing of animal. In indoanime forum, there's an artwork section where members can post their artworks. I and some other members made a drawing theme, so we draw something which suits the theme. And this is a post for "animal" theme. I made two drawings for this theme. I'll post the second drawing on my next post.

Why bird? Why puffin bird? I don't know. I like birds, and I know I'll draw birds if I have to draw animals. So I searched nice pics for the reference, and I found this :

So I drew it. Not a perfect drawing though. The wings span are too wide. Puffins don't have wings that long. But yeah, I like the result.

I've always known that we can learn a lot from animals, and now Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace and Gromit and Creature Comforts, has proven it, with the creation of The Animals Save the Planet, 11 cute, clever, uber-short animated films on different environmental topics, including meat eating, plastic bags, water use, light bulbs, recycling, waste and transportation. Each video features animals in their natural habitat encouraging others to make green choices (such as the farting cow, the showering hippo, the recycling lions, and the bicycling penguin).

The shorts were originally created to show on Animal Planet, and they’re a terrific way to spark discussion with (or give somewhat subtle hints to) friends and family about important environmental topics. With all the depressing news in the media about the state of the world, it’s nice to find a fun, uplifting way to encourage positive change. Share these shorts with someone who needs a laugh...or a hint.

If you come across an abused cat, remember to get a necropsy done and to file a police report even if you have no suspects. This helps if you DO eventually find the suspect and you have the previous cases on file.

One thing also to remember is not to narrow down the list of suspects prematurely. I remember a case where someone reported seeing an older man of a certain race - the suspect turned out to be a younger man who was of a different race. Some witnesses may not be trustworthy - it doesn't mean that they don't mean well, but I read recently that most witnesses of a crime are unreliable because everyone perceives the situation differently and because it happens to fast. If you tend to look for someone based on rather sketchy evidence, you may let the actual suspect slip away undetected.

Another thing to remember of course is that if a witness is not willing to testify, then the evidence is as good as useless. A witness has to give firsthand evidence - hearsay is NOT good enough to stand up in court.

Posted by Dawn at 9:51 AM

Please note that unlike human crimes, animal abuse charges cannot be brought before the court unless there's a witness. Apparently, forensics or other methods of crimes solving don't apply to animal abuse cases, so nevermind if you've evidence like murder weapons and so on.

Here's the article about the latest victims in Pasir Ris:

May 12, 2008

4 cats found dead - 3 with stab wounds

By April Chong

ANOTHER four cats have been found dead in Pasir Ris, bringing the death toll to seven felines since May 2.

Of the four, three were found in Pasir Ris Town Park on Monday, within 50m of one another and with abdominal puncture wounds.

The fourth cat was found nearby, in an open field near Block 536. It had a fractured jaw.

It had no other observable wounds, and it is not known whether its death was related to that of the other three.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), alerted to the deaths, said the wounds on the three in the park were stab wounds, not the result of dog bites.

On May 2, three cats were found in Pasir Ris Street 21, doused with what is believed to be thinner.

Two died and the third was eventually put down as a result of its injuries.

The SPCA is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons involved in this spate of cat deaths.

The SPCA may be contacted on 6287-5355, Extension 9.

Sadly, more and more horses are being abandoned out west.
The situation for marginal horses —

Sadly, more and more horses are being abandoned out west.

The situation for marginal horses -- horses whose poor physical condition or disposition makes them targets for slaughter -- is even worse, after a court ruling sought by animal-rights groups effectively shut down the U.S. horse slaughter industry last year.

The result is that a growing number of unwanted horses are being starved or turned loose to fend for themselves in the U.S. West, according to animal welfare advocates.

"What concerns me is a fate worse than slaughter," said Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University and an authority on the handling of livestock such as horses. "We've got people turning horses loose in fields, dropping horses off in the night -- my worst nightmares are coming true."

And what caused this situation?

Horses eat hay made from either grass or alfalfa, or a mix of both, and a modest amount of grain. Prices fluctuate, but in east central Idaho, hay prices have risen to $145 from $120 per ton a year ago, a jump of 21 percent. In northern Idaho it costs $220 per ton and as much as $300 per ton in parts of California. Feeding a horse can cost $2,000 a year or more.

Ok. I can understand that. Prices for everything have skyrocketed in the last year. But, I have a feeling that well-intentioned, but misguided, policies have led to this sad story.

But the romantic concept of freeing a tamed horse to roam the West's wide open spaces bears no resemblance to the reality, said Kirk Miller, livestock investigator in Idaho and Montana for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"They have no survival instinct in the wild, no clue as to what's dangerous to eat, no knowledge of how to grub for food under the snow," he said.

Miller and Colorado State's Grandin are among animal experts who say the campaign led by the Humane Society of the United States to end domestic horse slaughter was well-intentioned but misguided.

Now the tens of thousands of American horses marked for slaughter are shipped to Canada and Mexico, where long, stressful journeys end in what some horse advocates say can be unduly painful deaths.

Most horses are slaughtered for human consumption, with Europe and Asia providing markets for their meat.

Some horse associations are siding with the Humane Society in its fight to end export of horses for slaughter altogether. But others are seeking to re-establish processing in the United States to broaden the outlet for unwanted horses and to ensure the animals are killed by a mechanical method approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Keith Dane, director of equine protection for the Humane Society, said for Americans to have their horses killed for their meat would be akin to sending their pet dogs to slaughter for human consumption.

But unlike its canine counterpart, a horse weighs an average of 1,000 pounds and disposal of its carcass after Humane Society-recommended euthanasia has become burdensome. Where permitted by law and where able, owners can bury carcasses on their own land or pay several hundred dollars in assorted fees to deposit the remains at a local landfill.

Those complications may be behind what state livestock officials and federal land managers in the West say is a spike in the number of horses shot dead and dumped on public lands.

There you go.

Look, I love animals, and I look poorly on those who abuse and mistreat animals; however, misguided and foolish policies endorsed by "animal rights activists" have led to this sad story. Now, government controlled methods of maintaining and handling horses have been shuttered, with the result being the number of sick and abandoned horses reaching unheard of levels.

And what angers me the most is that those groups who declare themselves the protectors of animals have created this disaster. And they refuse to answer for their actions.

Meet Lynn, aka SiriusMosaics on Flickr. I came across her mosaics some time ago now and it's been a really great journey watching her work come to be. She's fast and what I love about her work is the fact they are playful - whimsical without being garrish. I look at her ever-growing body of work and it makes me feel good, really good!

Originally from the mid-west, Lynn moved around the east coast in her 20’s and 30’s until finally settling in North Carolina where she lives with her husband and three Dobermans, Gretchen, Merlot and Wolfgang. When not making mosaics, she enjoys working in the yard and reading.

Lynn grew up in a family that is very crafty, and thinks genetics plays a part in her creativity. As a little girl, Lynn sewed clothes, quilted and drew. As a teen she made macramé jewelry and did cross-stitch. She is an absolute dog lover and obviously finds alot of solace in them, as she writes: "I made and sold jewelry in the mid 1990’s, but after my muse, Sarah the Doberman, went to the Rainbow Bridge at a young age in 2001, I was so broken hearted that I never touched another piece of jewelry."

In 2006 Lynn created SiriusMosaics, in memory of Sarah, with the thought that she is now one of the stars in heaven. "I think I started doing mosaics because I didn’t have control over events that happened in my life, but I did have control over my mosaics from the first image in my head to the finished piece." Mosaics also have a calming effect on her as she fits and cuts each piece, allowing her mind to be quiet.

Lynn started with covering flower pots with shards of Italian pottery and found objects. "I would look at artists work on the internet for inspiration and I think that is how I got interested in doing mosaics in stained glass." In the spring of 2007 she bought herself a glass cutter and a pair of wheeled nippers and covered any 3D object she could find such as a frog planter, a Buddha head and some rocks. It is from here that Lynn has progressed to what she is creating now.

Lynn has no formal art training and is self taught from books and trial and error. Her ideas usually come to her while lying in bed trying to sleep and while sitting around looking at catalogs ("Yes, you can find inspiration in catalogs", she exclaims. LOL). Interestingly she states "...my mind is racing with thoughts. I don’t feel I have found my style yet and sometimes feel frustrated. I find myself frantically trying to finish a project to get started on another – like there is something inside me that is trying to speak out in my art." Lynn is one of my e-mosaic friends that cranks out her work. She is fast but it doesn't seem to detract from the finished piece, in my humble opinion. I admire that about her, about anyone that can work fast and still make great decisions along the way...

She has recently opened a store on Etsy.
