Today's Flavor is the AmpLive remix of Radiohead's Videotape, featuring Del the Funky Homosapien. This is from Amplive's Rainydayz Remixes album.

The hook on this track is incredibly catchy and Del's lyrics are stellar.

Amplive has made his reputation by remixing top-tier indie artists like Radiohead, MGMT, Of Montreal, and now Tokyo Police Club. I'd have to say that I'm a fan of literally everything this guy does, from his incredibly catchy "Weird Fishes" remix to this new "The Baskervilles" tune, its all gravy.

It seems as if Amp has a formula that hes been sticking to:

1. Make the beat disgustingly catchy
2. Add some hip-hop friends to the track (Aesop Rock is on this one)
3. Work the angles (sharp and precise)

Back in the day, when I used to use instant messenger, I used to keep a list of songs/albums I

Back in the day, when I used to use instant messenger, I used to keep a list of songs/albums I "recommended" that my friends look into on my profile...Yeah, I thought I was pret-tyyy, pret-tyyyy, pret-ty cool, but in my defense, I never purported to have the biggest library...or be cutting edge. Tell you the truth, I think those who actually looked and used my recommendation list appreciated the fact that I wasn't a such a elitist "contrarian" about my suggestions; I merely posted what sounded good to me, commercial or not. So I figured I'd just bring it back for nostalgia's sake; I can't think of any real tangible description for the main criterion, so I'll just call it "songs I'm not skipping on my iPod right now." I'm also doing it here because I'm too cheap to drop $5/month for last.fm, but you should check it out; you can still make your own radio for free). Keep in mind my musical palette is a bit varied and completely capricious, so not every suggestion is for everyone, but I think that makes it better, so you have to sort it out yourself; plus you can then discover the whole album yourself. Oh and listed in no particular order.

1. AmpLive - Video Tapez from Rainydayz Remixes. Props to my girl Lleigha for putting me onto this one. Apparently this guys is based out of the Bay area (right up your ally, JWeezy) and this remix of Radiohead's In Rainbows is a great work of indie hip-hop (if that's what you would even call it, I have no idea). Either way, this is probably my favorite track on the album. I guess the simple thing to say would be, "if you liked In Rainbows, and you like good beats, you'll like this remix...which Radiohead kind of got pissed at him for because he didn't consult them about it...and released it for free, but...whatever.

2. Phonte (from Little Brother) f. Carlitta Durand - Take on Me. This is just a singlay. Yep, that take on me, Phonte remixed a classic, and I love it. Anytime you touch a classic you gotta use those kit gloves, and Phonte just reaffirmed what I already believed; that music is music, doesn't matter where you're from; anyone can appreciate anything. AND he sang the vocals...that in and of itself is worth a HUGE nod.

3. DJ Drama & Lil Wayne - Gettin' Some Head from Dedication: Gangsta Grillz. I have realized that I tend to prefer Lil Wayne on freestyles and mixtapes much more than I like his commercial stuff. You should definitely get your hands on this mix-tape if you can, and if you enjoy Lil Wayne. The thing I like about it, is you get to hear what Lil Wayne can do over beats you've heard from other popular singles. Also checkout, Poppin' Them Bottles, I'm a Ridah, This What I Call Her, and Weezie F Baby.

4. Santogold - You'll Find a Way from Santogold. Santogold is one of few artists I can really claim to having "been all over before it was hip." Yeah, before her songs were playing at the end of Entourage episodes, and during Bud Light commercials... actually, both of them, I was in the 9:30 Club with my boys Craphonso and the Lawless Element (not the rap duo from Detroit, just a kid I know) watching Santogold open for Architecture in Helsinki. I have yet to meet anyone who didn't like Santogold, but then again, who do I know? Lights Out, and L.E.S Artistes are also "pretty dope tracks,"...sorry.

5. Röyksopp - Remind Me from Melody A.M. Everyone knows this song by the Norwegian duo, they just don't know they do. This is the track from the very first GEICO Caveman commercial when he's going through the airport, and sees that billboard that spawned a series of unnecessary, never-be-as-good-as-the-original commercials and a short-lived series on ABC. Props to my girl Lleigha, again, (take in some of her eclectic musical palette here) for putting me onto the music video, which is pretty cool, but I was shocked that I had to fill her in on the fact that this song was used in a GEICO commercial, or that ABC actually had a series based on the cavemen from said commercial. She didn't believe me until she verified with the internet, but can you really blame her? I mean, the whole story does seem entirely too fantastic to be true.

Tracks I'm totally listening to and not telling anyone about:

1. Usher - Love in this Club

2. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love

3. The-Dream - Fast Car

4. Greg Laswell - What a Day

It's kind of weird that this one got brought to my attention because lately I've been really into MGMT, which is totally out of my main listening demographic. However, I've always felt that Amplive was extremely talented in the studio, IE: his Radiohead remix album, and this mash-up is no different. He's definitely set a precedent for himself with that album and previous mash-ups, and he's yet to live them down.

Got a bunch of good stuff in the mail the past couple of days, so I'm busting out another redthreat. This post is full of weird stuff. Well, not weird, but stuff I'm not usually into, if you're expecting some typical biscuits then you should just leave now.

This post is a testament to the fact that I'm a fan of good music and good production, whatever genre it may fall under.

Ian Anderson (Afternoon Records + Vitriol Promotions) is always broadening my musical horizons with stuff I would never think to listen to on my own. For example, Now, Now Every Children, Poison Control Center, The Wars of 1812, and One For The Team are a few of the great bands he's introduced me to.

Haley Bonar is another name you could add to that list. "Big Star" is her first single off of her new album, "Big Star", which is set to be released June 10th on Afternoon Records. Through-out the track, her voice and supporting instruments create an atmosphere that just flows, I think the production is a strong-point on this one.

Personally, Haley isn't something I would listen to on the regular, but as you know, sometimes one needs a break from the monotony. "Big Star" is a nice little break from my electro life.

Haley Bonar - Big Star

Afghan Raiders is a name I had never heard before today, but I feel like I'll be hearing it more in the future. "Future Thinkers" is a single off of the Raiders first vinyl/ digital release on their indie label; Badical Beats. What a dope name for a label.

"Future Thinkers" has a techy, video game feel to it, but at the same time it still has the balls of a full-out dance song to back it up. The vocals are a nice touch too. Man, talk about a well rounded track!

Afghan Raiders - Future Thinker

If you've ever tuned into Biscuits before then Mr. Gaspar's name should ring a bell. He's done some pretty sweet mash-ups and remixes that I've posted in the past and this is another one. It takes a brave man to pick apart "Love Fool" and Gaspar successfully did it; I never thought I'd see the day that The Cardigans were remixed.

I think Andy Bernard put it best when he said,"Whatever happened to those guys?"

The Cardigans - Love Fool (Mr. Gaspar Remix)

I'm going to be honest with you here... I know nothing about Jealous Girlfriends, Of Montreal or MGMT. Their names look familiar because they constantly saturate The Hype Machine's popular list, but beyond that they are foreign to me.

I am, however, quite familiar with Amplive. Remember all the great work he did on the Radiohead remix album? I do. Remember all the bullshit he had to cut through to release it? I do too. Here are some more stellar remixes by the phenom that is known as Amplive, hopefully he didn't have any legal troubles releasing them.

After many days spent contemplating, I've decided to quit writing for Evolving Music. It's not to say that the time spent here was not well spent, because it most certainly was, but I just don't see any feasible way to keep writing when my passion for it isn't there. For months now, I've brought you posts about the music industry, Gnarls Barkley, Radiohead, NIN, Immortal Technique, AmpLive, Blue Scholars and Throw Me the Statue, just to name a few. I've ranted and raved against American Idol and the pop music landscape, while attempting to boost an agenda of underground resurgence and backlash against the powers that be.

But it's just too much now. The pressure of weekly trying to come up with new posts and topics to captivate the mind and soul has taken a toll on me. I'm weary with my struggle and want to go back to the days when I could put a CD on and just listen, not jot down my notes for the album review. I'd like to revisit the days when my friends from MixMatchMusic were just my friends, and not my bosses. In short, I want it to all go back to the way it was.

So I bid adieu to you, fine readers, and in this, my final post, I wish you a very happy April Fool's Day. Blue Scholars and GZA tonight at the Independent!

WOW it's the second post! Waddy or Stan haven't done any yet, and probably won't until the weekend, so I'll fill up the time instead :D

Right...we might make some awful tunes this weekend on GarageBand for you to listen to when you're dosing on crack or drinking ethanol or whatever's 'street' outside of K-Dub. That will be a gaggle. This reminds me - look on the right hand side of the blog and you'll see some links which you can click on, or not. If you click on a link you might find something funny, or something weird, or something rubbish and irrelevant.

Stan and his buddy Dom did some 'good tunes' a while back. This is what they did...'they' being DJ Stan and MC Dominic...prepare to GUFFAW!

ANYWAY. Have a watch of this HILARIOUS trailer for PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. It's got that Seth Rogen guy from THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP and other comedy flicks. Just watch it, you won't regret it...

The biggest news this week though is Waddy's artwork on exhibition at the Tate Modern. He got really psyched about this over the past month and it finally got shown. And it was a SUCCESS! Loads of art critics reviewed it and put it in all the newspapers. We'll only put the good reviews up, but I might put a 'bad' one up too but don't tell Waddy!

So yeah, here is one of the two originals that were on show at the Tate Modern last weekend:

Say Waatt? by Waddy (2008)

"ravishing...really shows the culture of these times in a way nobody has touched on before...the new Banksy...Waddy is at the forefront of slop-art movement" - The Independent

"I'd be proud to name my child Waddy...it makes you think "why does this man look like he does?" and "why is he saying 'Say Wat'?"...terribly thought-provoking" - The Guardian

"I went home immediately and had some porridge. Later, I went to bed." - Boris Johnson MP

"My wife cried and so did I. A sad day for the art world. Maybe we can't handle this kind of awesomeness yet." - Brian Sewell, Evening Standard

So yeah, you heard it here first! Waddy has taken the art world by storm. After forming the band Pen-Ice with our fellow K-Dubber, Knomey, he layed low, until now. I asked him what his hopes are for the future, and in response he just giggled, said "making movies" and then rubbed his nipples. So I guess his next venture will be into experimental film. Maybe he'll update you (EXCLUSIVELY) on it soon!

To round things off I thought I'd put up some music and a video. Did anybody like the latest Radiohead album, In Rainbows? Yes? No? Either way, download the remix album by AmpLive HERE. It's free. One track has Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 so it can't be all that bad if you don't like Radiohead!

And here's a modern classic from Funny or Die. To hear some advice on how to help the environment click on the link below...

Also, don't forget to COMMENT US and BOOKMARK US. THAT WOULD BE NICE! Kthnxbi!

EDIT: Here we go, news just in about a new film coming out sometime called TROPIC THUNDER. It stars BEN STILLER, JACK BLACK and SOME BLACK GUY who looks familiar.... Read THIS article where you will find out who it is...

AmpLive has been one of the most talented and diverse producer/DJs of the last ten years. His work as part of the Zion I duo has exemplified an ability to bring in a variety of musical styles and genres to the hip-hop world. In addition to this work, Amp has worked with or done remixes for Goapele, Akon and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussy Cat Dolls. He has also produced music for ESPN's Sportscenter, So You Think You Can Dance?, America's Next Top Model, and MTV's shows Cribs and The Real World. On top of the musical creation, he has earned a Platinum Plaque for his Linkin Park remix as well as The Guardian's "Best Producer in the Bay," and San Francisco Weekly's "Best Hip Hop Group in the Bay" awards. AmpLive's recent release, Rainydayz Remixes, a remix album of the Radiohead album In Rainbows, has received considerable press, word of mouth, and excellent reviews. The mash-ups, utilizing and remixing pieces of the original album, received Radiohead's blessing to be distributed for free. Because of the MixMatch nature of this album and the various production, distribution and copyright issues associated with such an undertaking, we thought it was about time to catch up with Amp and talk to him about his musical history and future, his run at the Radiohead album, and the future of the music industry and distribution models in general. Below is the interview Amp granted to Evolving Music to talk about these issues. Insert gratitude and round of applause here...

AC: Your music and production, from Mind Over Matter to Heroes in the City of Dope, always exhibits a huge variety of sounds and influences from different genres that speaks to a diverse musical enjoyment. What genres catch your ear, what is the foundation of your personal musical enjoyment, and when starting out on songs, is it a conscious effort to bring these genres in, or are they embedded and just come out in your music?

Amp: Well, I grew up exposed to different types of music. I am from Texas, so I was surrounded by country music. I played the drums at my church, listened to hip hop, skate punk and techno in middle school, took piano lessons, and was forced to watch the local symphony at least twice a month. So I look at music as a big bubble. All genres catch my ear. I feel that you can find something good in everything. When I am creating songs, I generally go off the feeling that I have or the point I want to get across versus thinking of the genre that it would be in.

AC: Zion I, at various times, has brought in collaborating MCs and producers. For Heroes in the City of Dope, Grouch was brought on for the entire album. What process do you use when determining who you'd like to work with on upcoming tracks? When you do collaborate, is there a set formula you like to use for combining with another musician, or is it a more organic process? How have your collaborations contributed to your personal growth as an artist, and do you find yourself revisiting methods you picked up from people you've made music with in your own?

Amp: Collaborations and observation has definitely helped me grow as a producer. When I first started in the early 90s, Spearhead X, who was a producer for Dallas Austin, taught me how to tighten my drums. While L Rock, who now is a main producer in Lil Jon's camp, helped with musical arrangements and learning how to play. So as I evolved and started becoming a professional years later, I took these experiences and applied them to my music. So in doing the collaboration album, Heroes in the City of Dope, I wanted to make sure there was equal input from everyone. For that album Grouch and I gave approval on the beats and the songs as they were finished. So we both had our touches on the music, even if I produced the track.

AC: Is there one genre that you most enjoy incorporating in your music, and is there any sound you've been wanting to work in a song that you haven't done yet?

Amp: Hip Hop music is my basis and in my soul, so that will always be incorporated into my music. I have always wanted to do a song using a harp. Hopefully in the future that will happen!

AC: Obviously your remix of In Rainbows demonstrates an appreciation for the album. How long have you been a Radiohead fan, what initially introduced you to their music and which is your favorite song and album? Now that they've proven amenable to your remix effort, are you considering working on any of their other work?

Amp: Ive been a Radiohead fan since the late 90s. "Karma Police" from the album Ok Computer was what set it off for me. Even though that was their hit song and everyone liked it at that time, the hip hop feel and knock of it captured me. Then their sound got more electro and I really started getting into them. I would have to say that before In Rainbows, Kid A was my favorite album. I just think they are off the hook because they successfully push the envelope at all times. I would definitely do more remix work, just approach it differently next time.

AC: The growth of collaborations when it comes to mash-ups is something that has really been quite fast over a relatively short period of time. Was this the first time you had thought about doing something like this, and what prompted you, over any other music you might currently be listening to, to work with this album?

Amp: Well, I have always done remixes and twisted up music. I did my first mashup cd about a year ago, Beats, Remixes, and a side of Mashups, where I took all kinds of vocals, including old Zion I a cappellas, and combined them with different music. It got a really good response and people were telling me that they liked it better than the normal mashups. Thats why I thought that I could do this well.

AC: There are a few songs, "Bodysnatchers," "House of Cards" and "Jigsaw Falling Into Place," from In Rainbows that you didn't work with on the Remixes. What made you decide to work with the tracks you did?

Amp: Well, for one timing. I had started working on a remix for "House of Cards" and "Bodysnatchers," but there wasnt enough time to finish and do what I wanted to do. Especially "Body Snatchers." Man, that song is good!! I just messed with the songs that I felt were the easiest to remix first.

AC: Initially you received a Cease and Desist for these tracks. What was the progression from that letter to Radiohead allowing them to be distributed? Was it a process that went on through the labels, or through you and the band?

Amp: Basically, after the cease and desist came, we reached out to Radiohead. After sending them the songs and listening to them, they gave an ok for the release.

AC: What are your thoughts on the method of going without a label to start, allowing consumers to pick the price of the album and providing it for free as Radiohead did with In Rainbows? You've also now released and received considerable press from your remixes being available for free. What is your view of this change in distribution, and where do you see the traditional label industry heading in the next five years?

Amp: I think that it was ground breaking how they decided to do that. It was giving back to the fans who have been supporting them. By giving the album away for free at first and then offering it for sale later was saying that "for all of the people who have been supporting us, we will give you first dibs on the new record". I think that shows respect. I think the industry is changing, but I dont know the end result. I do feel that groups will have to do more than just rely on their music for income. The song is going to be more of a business card than a product. A group's show and merchandise are going to be the new product. I think that the traditional label is going to combine with management and marketing formats. It will be all in one.

AC: I think your description of the song as a business card for musicians is a very solid one. I think a lot of people believe that with iTunes now being the second largest music distributor in the world and songs being sold for a dollar, artists are seeing more revenue from the sale of their music. Is this a true assumption on the part of the consumer? And could you address how the change in format and distribution has altered your income from the release of Mind Over Matter, which was primarily CD and word of mouth, and has since been released on iTunes, to later albums that were released on iTunes immediately? What DOESN'T the consumer know about artist profits from their music distribution?

Amp: Well, the biggest misconception is that the artists are making more money because of iTunes. What consumers (and artists actually) need to realize, is that it takes money to make money. Having your music on iTunes is only going to sell it if you are able to spend the proper amount of money and have a working staff of people to promote where to find your music. This is where a record label or promotions company comes into play. I have always been independent so the way i see my revenue hasn't changed as much. Because I have been putting out albums since 1997, I have been able to build a fan base that has followed my music from the CD to the digital era. So things have been consistent, in terms of the career of Zion I.

AC: In your music, what is currently holding the most interest for you and what has brought you the most enjoyment recently? You've been doing DJ sets now, how do these differ for you in preparation and presentation from your shows as Zion I? Is there any work being done on a new album?

Amp: Definitely doing the Rainydayz Remixes brought me enjoyment. I also have been working with the soul artist Codany Holiday and his album is sounding tight. But most of all the new Zion I album, The Take Over, has been really tight to complete. I have been DJing for years, it's nothing new. For Zion I I just wanted to step up the game and do more than just play tracks in the back, so I make live music on stage too. But I plan to incorporate that into my djing also.

AC: The work you do with Codany Holiday on the Rainydayz album is tight. In your work on his album, are you moving more into classical soul sounds, have you been slipping hip-hop into his soul? Talk a bit about the collaboration with him and what it's meant for both of you in terms of releasing a soul album.

Amp: Codany Holiday (pronounced Courtney) is a naturally gifted singer. So producing for him hasn't been hard at all. The biggest challenge was the sound we wanted to go with. I thought it was best to go with what was natural to him. When you talk to him about his mentors and what singers he admires, they range from Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway to Phillip Bailey (Earth, Wind, & Fire). So I definitely wanted to use more classic soul production, but hip hop with a 2009 twist to it. The response has been great. With Codany has been down with Zion I for awhile, he has been involved in alot of our songs. Working with him and producing his album was only natural. He brings alot of ideas to the table with production and arrangements. He is "the truth" in terms of gifted soul singers.

AC: Over the years you've been creating music, has there been one change or innovation that has significantly altered how you think about or make music?

Amp: Definitely the use of the computer and software to make music has been the big change for me. For years I just used analog equipment, ASR10, MPC, and all the other traditional machines. Now everything is on the computer and the songs are right in front of you...makes you look at music in a different way.

AC: In terms of looking at the music visually in a different way, could you talk about how that changes your approach to making the music? Do you find yourself dealing with creation in a different way now that you see the music visually and what are those differences? Would you be willing to give a description of step by step process you take, from mental idea to finished song?

Amp: Using Pro Tools and Logic has definitely made me look at music differently. Instead of seeing beats as loops, I now have the whole song mapped out in front of me. Its like looking at a song linear instead of circular. So to make a very basic song I always start with a melody or drum pattern, then build on top of that. Once I have something going in a quick loop I spread it out in the computer by repeating that part to the length of about 5 minutes. Within that I add beat changes and other sounds.

AmpLive's creative and dynamic approach to music is amazing. His use of various genres from a musically diverse upbringing has helped the movement infusing the hip-hop genre with new sounds and broader spectrums. He is currently on tour and working on music for Codany Holiday and the upcoming Zion I release The Take Over. You can find his music through Myspace, iTunes and any other place music is sold. Evolving Music and MixMatchMusic would like to once again thank AmpLive for his time and energy in providing this interview.

Well, its over. My first BS (BrainSpasms) radio show is done, through, finished. I woke up early, sat myself down in the dark studio, and let the tunes roll. Now I thought I'd have a recording to post here, so anyone that missed the show could listen again, but something sort of went wrong. I brought a CDR disk, but when I put it into the recorder it said I had one song on it! So my first step into the radio world, will be remembered only in the minds of my three or four listeners. Oh well, theres always next time. But as promised, here is my playlist from the show, check out these sweet sounds, you won't regret it. I am even so nice that I linked up each track with links where you can get most of the songs for free, and legal too!

After a cease & desist put the breaks on Amplive's Radiohead In Rainbows remix project, the online music community reasonably wondered if the tracks would ever see the light of day. Well, here they are.
While the Oakland producer/DJ acknowledges that he probably should have contacted Radiohead (who were not involved in the project) to seek approval prior to making his interpretations publically available, an agreement has been reached between all involved parties and Amplive has been granted permission to release Rainydayz Remixes for free to the general public. Effective immediately, the eight-track record is available here.
Rainydayz Remixes is composed exclusively of source material pulled from In Rainbows, re-envisioned by Amplive and complimented by vocal work from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien.

So I'm sitting here bedridden on account of my wisdom teeth, and i'm wondering what kind of music the kids listen to these days. I mean hopefully this blog is supposed to be hip, with it, and overall something which provide pleasure to those who like me use their music as a form of social currency. Point is, here's some stuff that I've been diggin on for a while now but just recently have been able to post.

First off we've got a selection from the Amplive Remixes of In Rainbows. The album in its raw form got great acclaim and still seems to be topping out all around the blogosphere. DJ Amplive came along and released an entire album of remixes from the album, needless to say, its some good stuff. What makes it so interesting is that instead of being like so many recent remixes, the album retains the low key sound of the original Radiohead tracks. Check out the remix to Videotape, my personal favorite off of both albums.]

Also if you want to download the album in its entirety click here, I'd like to thank the ever amazing people over at Panda Toes for turning me on to this one.

A Radiohead In Rainbows Remix album...already. This one (I'm sure there will be more) is by Bay Area producer AmpLive (no relation...seriously). Radiohead's appeal transcends sub-pop-culture genres, so I knew we would start to see DJ/producers giving their latest brilliant album the remix treatment, and then figuring out the legal end of things later.. Especially considering how Dangermouse's unauthorized Jay-Z/Beatles remix LP The Grey Album launched his career.

The Gnarls Barkley producer leveraged social-media in 2004 by investing his time and energy into creating an innovative and provocative marketing tool and distributing it directly to his fans online for free, even though he knew he was taking a huge legal risk. It was a well known fact that no Beatles samples had ever been legally cleared. But it ended-up paying off for him in the long run, opening a flood-gate of opportunities and success since then, eventually leading to Grammy nominations in 2007 for the Gnarls Barkley "St. Elsewhere" debut.

AmpLive will not gain the same type of notoriety for this release that Dangermouse did in 2004 of course. His album features Del the Funky Homosapien, Too Short, Charli2na and other lesser-known MC's over chopped-up samples from In Rainbows, while Dangermouse's Grey Album grabbed major press by featuring Jay-Z vocals over uncleared samples of The Beatles, before being banned after just 3,000 pressings.

The Rainydayz Remixes album is now available as a FREE download..legally, but not before a cease-and-desist came from Radiohead's attorney. The two sides were able to work out their differences after some legal-wrangling because he is not getting paid for it (and probably because it's a very nice piece of work).

And of course DJs are also utilizing social media to market themselves in more ways than ever.. Downloadable-mixtapes are now almost a necessity for anyone trying to make a name for him or herself. Lately I've been enjoying local L.A.-area DJ Daz's carefully crafted works posted on his Pod-O-Matic page as podcasts.

Check out AmpLive's album and DJ Daz's mixtapes.. Comments are encouraged..
