Ria emailed me for this request. She wanted an ambigram that combines the names Ria and Ian in one design. She is planning to use this for their wedding next year.

For this design, I decided to use a script font which I thought will be appropriate. With this font, it will look nice on a wedding invitation or for other wedding accessories.

It looks simple but working on the R-N inversion was hard. I followed the design from another ambigram artist (Mark Simonson) for this one since that was the best design for R-N. Other solutions are possible with a gothic letter style but this one really rocks for a script design. The middle I-A was less complicated and was done easily. The last part for A-I was a bit hard especially in making an uppercase I for the design.

Ria liked the final output. She had a few more requests though like changes on the color and making the vines form into a circle. She also wanted a more visible letter R which Im still trying to figure out. Im glad it turned out well.

This is a request from my officemate, Ricci. She wanted an ambigram for her two little angels, Iya and Ally. Those are their nicknames. I chose them instead of the real names since its easier to work on.

The ambigrams went well since the letters cooperated. Especially with Ally where the LL part is a natural ambigram. Designing Iya was a bit tough but it came out great.

Ricci wanted something girly for her girls. Thus, I added those ornaments with the design. What I liked about the designs was that I was able to use the same style for both. Its not that often I can do that. Now they can use it proudly.

Pomysł na  ambigram Rise and Fall zrodził się bardzo spontanicznie, podczas słuchania jednego z utworów starego, dobrego Helloween. Ponownie pojawia się tu rozwiązanie dla pary liter A/S, wcześniej wykorzystane w ambigramie Silesia.

Ambigram Gordian Knot nawiązuje do jednego z epizodów podboju Azji przez Aleksandra Macedońskiego. Prastara przepowiednia głosiła, iż ten, któremu uda się rozplątanie węzła łączącego jarzmo z dyszlem, stojącego na dziedzińcu świątyni Zeusa w Gordion wozu, stanie się panem Azji. Jak wiemy czynu tego dokonał jednym cięciem miecza właśnie Aleksander, stając się później faktycznym władcą Azji.

Ciekawym rozwiązaniem wykorzystanym przy konstrukcji tego ambigramu jest przekształcenie brzuszka litery  D w ukośne elementy, tzw. „nogi" litery K w odwróconej wersji. Również zamiana dwóch raczej niepodobnych do siebie liter czyli G i T udała się nadspodziewanie dobrze.

Here is a commissioned ambigram for Killen. He requested an ambigram of his family name which he will have tattooed on his back. Part of the request is to design it to look like the font used in the ambigram of Illuminati which was drawn by John Langdon for the Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons. With the approval from the requester, I am posting my design here.

It is very challenging to get a request that have a predefined letter style in mind, since not all names or words would work as an ambigram using a specific font. When moving from one style to another, some readability or form would suffer. Before I started working with the design, I advised that I could not guarantee an exact font style but I can definitely come close to it.

The name Killen is easy on the LL part. That's a natural ambigram. The I-E inversion is commonly encountered and there are a lot of ways to do it in an ambigram. The K-N is the tough part. I did an ambigram for Kwan and used the same style here. My first draft was this.

His feedback was that the K-N wasn't very readable and that the middle LL looks very static and boring. He wanted to see some form to the overall design. So I came up with a new solution for K-N and made a cave in and out approach to the design. Here are the next drafts.

The K-N was greatly improved. It's readable. However, we didn't like the cave in design. The LL was made smaller and looks more like letter II than LL. We decided to go for the cave out approach. Finally, I offered a new design that made it slant. We both liked it this time.

I still made a few edits on the form of the ambigram trying several arrangements like arc, diamond, pointed and others. Since this will go to his back, he wanted something that will look good on the contour of his back. I wont be posting the final design here but somehow the design still looks similar as above except on the arrangement.

I was great working with this customer. His feedback was very straightforward and clear making the design work for both of us.

So my day, in short, can be summarized as such:

WOW.  Totally, completely, totally, completely worth the money (...if it doesn't break on me).  I seriously think Nintendo should consider something like Apple's iTunes store where we can buy games to load onto one unit instead of carting around a bagful of game cartridges.  *WARNING* Irrelevant blather:  (I've always wondered how the brain comes up with words... for example, I knew that I was going to be mentioning cartridges before I typed the word carting... I could just as easily have said lugging or schlepping...)

I felt like a kid at Christmas when I was downloading the Colors! application.  I'm happy with everything except the glaring lack of any form of "undo" (every time I crapped up, my mind went APPLE-Z, APPLE Z!!!) capability.  I finished a grand total of... ONE painting!  Let's just say that I got completely distracted with what my brothers were using their R4 for... (HEE HEE R-4-4).

AHH, it's so nice to be able to draw directly on the screen!!  And be all precise with colors and stuff!  Exclamation points for the rest of the paragraph!!  There are so many possibilities with this thing!!  It's a freaking portable cintiq!!  And it plays games!!  And you can email your pictures to people from the DS!!  And-and-and...yeah!!!  Wahoooooooooooooooo....!

And hey, thar, lookit whut mah mama baht fuh me!  Little baby cacti!

I think I have an affinity with weird baby stuff.  Most kids get puppies, but I have a baby turtle; most college kids keep little potted flowers, but I've got cactii!  In my defense, LOOK HOW COOL THOSE THINGS ARE.  The bright tops I think are called moon cactii that have somehow had their chlorophyll repressed and then been grafted onto the upright green cactii.

And now, in conclusion, I simply must pat myself on the back.  I MADE MY FIRST AMBIGRAM EVER.

HEHE turn your head upside down.

I've had this secret ambition (SEE why did I use ambition instead of desire?!) ever since I read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons three years back.  Ambigrams all over the place!

Here's another design for my Proud to be Pinoy series. I wanted to create some ambigrams for some Pinoy words. I have made Maldito and Maldito previously. Here is a design for Bongga. How do you translate Bongga in English?
I used a different font for the design. I dont think an English font would work well. This is like a retro inspired font and design. Bongga makes me think of song Bongga ka Day. Thus it has that retro and disco fever appeal.

The B-A inversion had several changes to make it readable. I know from the start that it is possible but making it readable and harmonious was a challenge. The GG part went well and looks pretty consistent with the overall design. But it took me several hours to make the right combination.

As a shirt, it looks good. But we're still finding time to market it. Its toxic at work and I'm finishing some more designs for my other clients. I though I could produce the shirts last month but I guess I have to delay it until next month again. Having a sideline can be stressful too.

Ostatnio rzadziej aktualizuję stronę, ale zapewniam - kilka naprawdę ciekawych ambigramów już czeka na publikację, wymaga jednak tylko kilku drobnych ulepszeń.

Dziś zaktualizowałem wpis poświęcony irlandzkim ambigramom. Aż dziwne, że jeszcze nikt nie zauważył fatalnego błędu ortograficznego który wdarł sie w ambigram słowa Irlandia (a może ktoś zauważył, tylko taktownie milczał podśmiewając się w duchu). Do dziś widniał tam napis Irleand a nie Ireland - jak faktycznie brzmi nazwa tego kraju. Fatalny błąd, wytłumaczalny chyba tylko podobnym brzmieniem polskiej nazwy, gdzie również pojawia się zbitka Irl. Cała sprawa może jednak stanowić znakomite potwierdzenie faktu, że czytając każdy tekst tak naprawdę nie odczytujemy go litera po literze tylko omiatamy spojrzeniem konotując tylko początek i koniec wyrazu.

Ambigrams are words which are crafted in such a manner that they are legible from more than one vantage point. Most common are the words which read same right side up and upside down. Symbiotograms are those which read one word right side up and another word upside down. Symbiotograms are generally a nice way to show the 'bondage' of loved ones.

Douglas R. Hofstadter describes an ambigram as a "calligraphic design that manages to squeeze two different readings into the selfsame set of curves." According to practitioner John Langdon, ambigrams were independently invented by himself and by Scott Kim in the 1970s. Kim used the name Inversions as the title of his first collection in 1981. The first published reference to "ambigram" was by Hofstadter, who attributes the origin of the word to conversations among a small group of friends during 1983–1984. Ambigrams became much more popular as a result of Dan Brown incorporating them into the plot of his bestseller, Angels & Demons.

Ambigram designs can be used as tattoos, wedding cards, visiting cards, t-shirts, or just a framed photo. They make up for a perfect gift for any occassion.

Przy konstruowaniu tego ambigramu skorzystałem z bardzo przydatnego narzędzia występującego w CorelDraw, jakim jest Kaligrafia z bocznego menu Środki artystyczne. Pracuje się na zwykłych krzywych, które dowolnie można przekształcać natomiast efekt naszej pracy widoczny jest od razu w formie kaligraficznej. Poniżej prezentuję "szkielet" stworzonego tą metodą ambigramu. Podobny efekt można uzyskać zmieniając tylko właściwości pióra konturu, gdzie również istnieje możliwość ustawienia kaligraficznej końcówki.

Poniżej "główne danie" dzisiejszego wpisu: ilustracja przedstawiająca dwóch magów parających sie białą i czarną magią. Rysunek powstał tradycyjnymi metodami - na papierze, natomiast pokolorowany został komputerowo.

Dla komfortu oglądających prezentuję go również w wersji odwróconej z "czarnym magiem" w roli głównej.

W którymś z poprzednich wpisów obiecałem pochwalić się moimi starymi rysunkami. Dzisiejszy wpis stanowi doskonałą dla tego okazję. Temat magów chodzi za mną już od wielu lat - na potwierdzenie tych słów bardzo stary, mający już 12 lat rysunek, jaki znalazł się w moim notatniku z czasów studiów (co może stanowić pewne wyjaśnienie, czemu dziś nie uczę w szkole dzieci historii :-) ).

Próba przedstawienia oryginalnego tytułu tej książki: The Fair Maid of Perth, w formie ambigramu udała się na tyle dobrze, że wpadłem na pomysł stworzenia strony tytułowej stylizowanej na"zaginiony pierwodruk". Jednak w tym celu konieczne było stworzenie kolejnego ambigramu - zawierającego nazwisko autora i miejsce wydania. Efekt moich zmagań, ambigram Walter Scott/Edinburgh prezentuję poniżej.

Nie wiem, czy gdyby nie wcześniej zamierzony koncept, zdecydował bym sie na stworzenie tego ambigramu, gdyż nie ukrywam, że niektóre przejścia i modyfikacje były dośc karkołomne, a sam ambigram nie jest tak czytelny jak tytuł. Poniżej wspominana strona tytułowa w całej krasie.

Na koniec jeszcze jeden ambigram zainspirowany chyba najbardziej znaną książką Scotta Rob Roy. Prezentuję surowy ambigram i dwie powstałe w programie CorelDraw ilustracje wykorzystujące go obok szkockich symboli. Niech trochę ożywią mój monotonny kolorystycznie blog :-)

Prauję jescze nad kilkoma ambigramami zainspirowanymi twórczością Scotta, więc za jakiś czas możecie spodziewać się kolejnej części tego wpisu.

Love is in the air, Everywhere I look around….

It is really nice to see everyone I know happily paired up at this time of year – or more accurately, it is nice to see the non-singletons I know dashing around sweatily, attempting to buy some gift that their loved one won’t demand the receipt for… (I really can help with that, by the way)

I am sorry about the rather dramatic depletion of stock at the moment – please email if anything you like or would like to give is unavailable and I will reserve a place on the waiting list for you while things get sorted out.

I am currently reeling from the fact that Stephen Fry has been in touch again to accept a pen that I am developing for Conway Stewart – of which more, of course, later. I suppose it isn’t that tricky a question to answer though, “I sent you some precious metal before, would you like some more?” Apparently he is willing to wave it around on QI. The pen, that is. Fnarr fnarr.

I have been looking at some new boxes. There are also printed lovelies and show-materials on the way (I hope).

Here’s to you, lovers and sweethearts everywhere. You are a damn sight braver than I am and you have my unswerving admiration.

Hope you like the ambigram ^ it was my first attempt and I think it's OK - pendant anyone?

Here's another request from my online buddy, Maldito. He requested for the word Maldito. At the same time, Quennie wanted Maldita for another ambigram shirt she wanted to wear. So I made both since there will be little change to design both ambigrams.

The M-TO inversion was a bit easy. The trick is on how to make a close loop for the O part. Somehow, I managed to make a good design. The middle part was hard. I have to make several revisions so that each letter will remain readable. The A-D rotation was the hardest part since they don't easily invert each other. The letter L suffered a bit during the process but still the design remain to be in harmony.

After the Maldito ambigram was completed, I moved on to create the Maldita design. It was a quick one. I only need to change the O to an A and retain the M design. Since I still have time, I decided to play around with the decor. I didn't use the usual swirls. This time I made a little chaotic effect to imply a more Maldita atmosphere. The result was interesting. I might use the same effect to the Maldito ambigram.

Finally, here's how both designs will look on shirts. We will definitely print them together with a few more Pinoy words I'm planning to come up with.

Podszedłem do tematu literalnie i przekształciłem całą zadaną frazę. Twarz pojawiająca się w środku to oczywiście zazdrosna o urodę Śnieżki zła królowa. W samym ambigramie największy problem sprawiło podwójne R w słowie Mirror. Również krótkie słowo On było dosyć trudno przekształcić - być może gdyby pomiędzy O a N znajdowała się jakaś inna litera, były by one bardziej odróżnialne. Bezpośrednie sąsiedztwo tych znaków nie sprzyja ich czytelności. Generalnie uważam, że tworzenie tego typu ambigramów jest dużo trudniejsze niż klasycznych - rotacyjnych , gdyż możliwości modyfikacji liter są tutaj znacznie skromniejsze.

Nie wykluczam, że w najbliższym czasie powrócę do tego tematu tworząc analogiczny ambigram do drugiej części frazy: „who is the fairest of them all?", na pewno mniej diaboliczny w stylu i oczywiście z umieszczoną centralnie twarzą Śnieżki.

Here's a design for my online buddy, Kwan.  He has requested an ambigram last September.  It was only lately that I started working on it.  This is the second design.  I wasnt satisfied with the first one since I used a different approached.  So I used the font style that I am comfortable with this time.

As usual, its a struggle to work with a letter "K" in an ambigram.  Hopefully, this solution is good enough.  I added the swirls to make it look good when this design is printed on a shirt.  So pareng Kwan, just email me if you me to print one for you.  That wouldn't be free though. :D

I tried to combine both and realized LE37 is a natural inversion....

W międzyczasie ogłoszono wyniki marcowego NAC. Jest mi niezmiernie miło, że mój projekt, prezentowany tutaj jakiś czas temu, zdobył największe uznanie będącego jurorem tej edycji Bastiana (Nasty Basty). Wszystkie nadesłane prace i komentarze można tradycyjnie obejrzeć na blogu Nagfy. Mnie szczególnie zachwycił ambigram Snowwhite autorstwa Nasty Basty, który jednak z oczywistych względów nie wszedł do stawki konkursowej. Jest perfekcyjny.

Dziś chciałbym zaprezentować kilka ambigramów będących nazwami polskich miast. Na razie tylko trzy miasta doczekały sie swoich ambigramów, jednak z pewnością na nich nie poprzestanę. Pierwsze z miast to moje aktualne miejsce zamieszkania czyli Łódź. Jednym ze świadectw minionej świetności tego miasta są secesyjne (choć nie tylko) kamienice. Dlatego też projektując ambigram starałem się nawiązać do charakterystycznego secesyjnego kroju liter.

Kolejnym miastem dla którego przygotowałem ambigram jest Wrocław. Posłużyłem się jednak pięknie brzmiącą i bardziej nadającą się do przekształcenia łacińską nazwą Vratislavia.

Pierwszy, prezentowany powyżej ambigram to swoista wprawka - w wyniku pośpiesznie dobranego kroju liter efekt końcowy nie do końca mnie usatysfakcjonował. Drugi ambigram powstał nie na bazie gotowego kroju lecz liter zaprojektowanych od początku przeze mnie. Bardziej spostrzegawczy czytelnicy z pewnością zauważą że ambigram ten nawiązuje do prezentowanego niedawno słowa Wordpress, gdyż elementy konstrukcyjne liter zaczerpnąłem z pliku roboczego tego właśnie projektu.

Nie poprzestałem jednak na tych dwóch projektach. Zawsze chciałem stworzyc ambigram na bazie kroju University Roman, którego doskonałe predyspozycje do tworzenia ambigramów ujawnił John Langdon tworząc jeden z najpiękniejszych ambigramów jaki widziałem - Victoria (przedostatni w galerii). Poniższy wzór nie ma w sobie aż tyle gracji i prostoty, jednak z trzech projektów dla słowa Vratislavia prezentuje się chyba najlepiej.

Na koniec, bardzo mi bliskie, jedno z najpiękniejszych polskich miast, w którym historia obecna jest na każdym kroku - Toruń. Szkoda, że dziś postrzegane jest w tak negatywnym świetle ze względu na osobę pewnego poszukiwacza wód geotermalnych.

Coraz częściej korci mnie by nie poprzestawać na samych ambigramiach i dodaję jakieś elementy rysunkowe, tym razem też nie mogłem się powstrzymać.
