So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go out to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. - Hebrews 13:12-14

This past April at the T4G Conference in Louisville, KY, John Piper preached on "How the Supremacy of Christ Creates Radical Christian Sacrifice". It was, by far, one of the most challenging and encouraging messages at the conference. Almost as encouraging was the Q&A that followed the message with Piper and CJ Mahaney, Mark Dever, and Al Mohler.  I came across the transcript of the Q&A again today and was reminded of how helpful it was to me.

I suspect that any true believer wants their lives to be characterized by a radical devotion to Christ. However, most of us live within a culture filled with quasi-benign (I say "quasi-benign" because every good and perfect gift can become an idol) distractions that have the potential to numb our affections for Christ depending upon the way our flesh responds to these things. Sports. Entertainment. Advertisements. Family responsibilities. Sex. Employment issues. The list could go on. This is just a sampling. Our world is also filled with much more sinister distractions with deliberate designs to "steal, kill and destroy" our joy. Pornography. The idolatry of sports entertainment. Over-realized infatuation with self. The love of money. These things rob us of both the ability and opportunity to live life with a radical flavor when they become our source of joy rather than Christ.

I suspect, as well, that these are also the things that keep us from doing the hard things in ministry. These are the things that we run to when we are running away from doing what is hard in life. In other words, we all have shameful comfort sins or distractions that cripple our ability to live as zealots for Jesus.

The "camp" is the place where we feel secure and comfortable, where we accomplish tasks with ease. While ministry is never easy, ministry is manageable and sustainable from the safety and security found inside the walls of the camp, walls often stabilized and erected by our own sense of competency in our giftedness. And here is the sobering truth: We are capable of doing ministry without love. But Christ was always motivated by love - particulary when he went outside the camp in obedience to the will of the Father for the sake of love. I think it is our lack of love that keeps us from radical Christian sacrifice. Lack of love for Jesus. Lack of love for others.

In the Q&A Piper reminds us that we all know what is hard for us to do for the cause of love. He reminds us that life is easy inside the camp, but outside the camp is Golgotha. Outside the camp is where our love for the Gospel is really put to the test.

So you all know what is hard for you to do in the cause of love. I am not advocating asceticism in some artificial way like taking a cold shower every morning. I mean you have a neighbor and you are scared to talk to him. You have a colleague and that colleague needs to be confronted about some bad habit. You have a marriage problem and you have been running from it forever and you need to tackle it because it is going to be emotionally exhausting to do it. You read Romans 12 with all the exhortations and you know that some of them are extremely difficult for you to do.

So my prayer is that this message will help me mainly to have more affection for the treasure of Christ so that in the moment—when your will is locked into fear, greed, and self-exaltation—you can see a pathway that is costly but looks biblically right, and have enough motive in the truth that I have seen that the Holy Spirit will take those truths and you will act.

Piper goes on to talk specifically about the hard path of following Jesus in relationship to evangelism, our spouse and our children. The motive for us to pursue a life of radical Christian service is the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf and the promise of the eternal city that is to come. This will spur on the kind of sacrificial love for Jesus and others that will cause the world to one day say that we are men and women of whom the world was not worthy (Heb 11:38). And this kind of proclamation would serve God's glory, not our own.

I'm hoping the movie still happens, but I can't help to be a little pessimistic about it. I think I'll go over tomorrow morning and set definate-ish plans. Like, at least a day. Hopefully Friday, but if not then Sunday would work best. I won't have too much homework either so I'm not too worried about time management.

It's nice to have the house to myself too. Here's my ideal Friday night:

He comes over as I'm getting off work, and I change there so as to save time and make the movie. We walk over and talk about how excited we are, giving each other random cutesy smiles. We get to the ticket booth and I'll say something corny like, "Isn't the guy supposed to pay, lord knows you're the man in the relationship" He'll chuckle and oblige. That'll be the first sign.

Through the movie we'll get scared, and I'll latch onto his bicep for "protection" even though I most likely won't be even a tad scared. I'll buy popcorn for us since he bought the tickets and our hands will hit more than just once.

After the movie, we'll be heading out and I'll ask him what he's doing. He'll most likely say something about hanging out with Nicole, and I'll sigh and say "okay". Then he'll ask if I had anything planned, and I'll say just a payback. I'll offer him to hang out with me, and not drink. We can watch family guy, play spore and he'll have a hot shower and a warm bed to sleep in. He'll be stoaked, and say YES!

We'll go back to my place and I'll request a shower first. Mainly because I stink from work, but also as a forthought of what's to come. I'll get out and wear only a towel, to let his AND my gaurd down. I'll offer him the next shower and he'll be just as excited to. When he's in though I'll ask if I can come in and dry my hair. "Sure" he'll say. And while he's in the shower I'll ask him about the other night.

"Remember when you said you wish you could read peoples' minds? On Monday during Heros?"

"Yeah, what about it"

"Well I guess I should let you know what I'm thinking" A lull of odd silence will set in for a second. It'll be easier for both of us to say and hear because there'll be a shower curtain behind us. "Well I'm thinking about you most of the time."

"Really? Thinking of me.. how?"

"Thinking of how much I might just... just... like you. Thinking of how much I might want something more from you than just friendship. But also thinking about how much of a risk this is. Thinking about how much I love our friendship and the time we spend together, but under that I want something more. Thinking about what you're thinking, and also releived that this is finally out there in the open. So yeah, that's what I'm thinking."

The shower will stop running and he'll grab his towel over the curtain. The silence will kill me, and lead me to think that he's not interested at all. "Well let me tell you what I'm thinking". He'll come out of the shower, towel around his waist, still wet and walk over to me. He'll grab the small of my back, pull me in, and kiss me. We'll kiss for what'll seem like forever and finally he'll pull away and say, "that's what I think"

I'll pull him back into my bed and we'll start to make out with just these loose towels on, but I'll stop. "I don't want to rush this, I like you too much." He'll agree and we'll just lay there for a while, holding each others half naked bodies talking about how long we've eached felt this way.

So yeah, I have high expectations for this weekend. Really, REALLY High expectations...

Atlanta vs Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers vs Matt Ryan. Both very young inexperienced, starting quarterbacks and Lambeau Field on the first weekend of October, it does not get any better than this. People were unsure of how Rodgers would play because of his shoulder injury, but in an attempt to beat Brett Favre's record setting streak of continuous starts, Rodger suited up and played. In the end, Matt Ryan was the quarterback who was leaving the field as a winner. This is the third week in a row that I have had to write about the Packers which is not a good thing. Hopefully they get the team back on track on their way to Seattle to visit former head coach Mike Holmgren.

San Diego vs Miami - So as I should have done when picking my picks for the week, the Chargers will now be known as the Padres. Hopefully this will give them a reason to start winning... Miami once again surprised the league with another upset victory. The Miami Dolphins are the team that everyone is going to overlook this season. Expect the Dolphins to finish at least .500 this season. They are that good. Or that average. However you want to look at it.

Buffalo vs Arizona - If any Buffalo Bills fans thought that JP Losman was a good quarterback hopefully this week proved something to you. The only good thing JP is good for is riding the bench and maybe giving the plays to the quarterback. On his first drive, JP lost a fumble and the Cardinals subsequently scored on the following drive. Hopefully, Trent Edwards can heal up over the bye week and come back in two weeks and start at quarterback. Concussions are so unpredictable so I'm sure we won't find out until next week whether he can play or not.

Pittsburgh vs Jacksonville - Once again, the Jaguars let me down. Their lack of a running game has imploded my fantasy teams all season long and until they find a decent tandem in the backfield, it's going to be a long season for the Jags.  Jones-Drew and Taylor must pick it up for Jacksonville's success. The Steelers are going to have another dominant year in their division and will end up making the playoffs once again.

So, as this will be my last blog before the NHL Season officially starts on Thursday, let me finish this by saying Go Wings... HEY HEY HOCKEYTOWN!

At the press conference in the Season Four finale, Jack said that Boone Carlisle, Charlie Pace and Libby were the other "survivors" of the crash before they succumbed to injuries or died on the Island under different circumstances. Of all the people that actually survived, why choose these three? I believe it is because all of them died an "innocent" death.

Boone died because he fell in that Nigerian drug plane, trying to help Locke, and in the process, made contact (or so he thought) with the outside world. " Boone was a sacrifice that the Island demanded" said Locke. Jack saw it as negligent homicide. Either way, he died for "the cause", whether for destiny or rescue.

Charlie Pace gave his life because of his strong belief in the "visions" of Desmond and his equally powerful devotion to Claire, Aaron and his friends. Again, death with the puriest of motive.

* E from Long Live Locke blog made an excellent point that Charlie made contact with Penny and that she might talk. Although, I think it was a strange omission, storywise, that Penny didn't ask Des where Charlie was when she rescued them. Could be chalked up to a combo of love & shock, but still...

Libby was shot (IMO by accident) by Michael in his "understanding" of how he was to get Walt back from The Others. In one of the mobisodes, Juliet is playing like they never asked him to kill. That he thought of that himself. Is this true or more master manipulation, by proxy, from Benjamin Linus. In either case, Libby was a victim of "friendly fire". ( Well, at least from the information we have been given so far. :) )

Knowing this, I think that if it was necessary to say some more survived the crash for the coverup (not exactly sure why it was, at this point) then maybe they agreed that this was the Losties' form of memorial to those who's bravery would have otherwise been forgotten.

Either that or they just wanted the group to number 8 ;) .

8. Did you deliver early or late?   9 agonizing days late...December 02, 1998, 9 days before my 19th birthday.

9. Did you have morning sickness?   Not so much as far as nausea, but I was headachy all the time...even a few migraines thrown in there, which I rarely get.

10. What did you crave?   Orange juice.

11. Who irritated you the most?  Honestly?  Doug, but we were having issues that are much too complicated to go into now.  Besides, I let that bad stuff go a loooooong time ago.  You know, bygones and such.

12. What was your first child’s sex?  Male

13. How many pounds did you gain throughout the pregnancy?  Not much at all, about 20-25 lbs.  I actually lost weight for most of my pregnancy.  I only started to gain at the end.

14. Did you have any complications during your pregnancy?  I discovered I had a allergy to coedine (I was taking it for my headaches) it was the only complication I had with the pregnancy...the birth was another story.

15. Where did you give birth? Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, MI

16. How many hours were you in labor? About 70 hours.  No stinking joke.   

17. Who drove you to the hospital?  My mom.

18. Who watched? My mom.  I wish now that I would have called Doug, but at the time, we were having problems...ugh...do I have to explain?  Just see answer #11.

19. Was it vaginal or c-section? Vaginal.

20. Did you take medicine to ease the pain?   Nothing. At. All.  Yeah, I'm good like that.  No, actually, there wasn't time.  Despite minimal complications during the pregnancy, I did had some pretty serious complication during delivery.  (Everything turned out fine!  No worries!)

21. How much did your child weigh? 7 lb, 3.5 oz

22. What did you name him/her?  Aaron Michael

23. How old is your first born today? 9

But this whole break wasn't a complete loss, and I really couldn't have wanted more out of it. The whole of my summer was pretty pointless and I only worked and played WoW for the first half. But the second half, and what is still going on couldn't be more of a wonderful confusion. Aaron.

Words can't express how much I think I care about him. Althought I don't want to say I love him, not yet at least, there is no doubt in my mind anymore that I want him. That he really is all I could want in a guy right now. Now there are flaws, oh trust me there are flaws, but what person doesn't have them? If he was utter perfection, I don't think I'd like him as much. In fact, the fact that he does have traits I find undesirable make me feel more desirable to him. I love the fact that on a scale, I feel we would weigh out about the same, relatively speaking.

He came back from his summer job in late August. He missed my birthday but that's fine. I didn't realize how much I missed him until he came back. I had completely forgot about my feelings in May. How much I wanted to kiss him before he left for 3 months. I never got that chance, and I still sort of regret it. I feel I might have been able to make him stay here. And if he did, this summer would have been THE hands down best summer of my life. A summer with a boyfriend. A summer with SOMEone.

It's times like just there that make me think maybe I just like the idea of "us" and I don't really like him. And if that's the case, fuck. But at the same time, life is a book of lessons. Though some we don't want to learn, or it hurts to read, it makes us a better person on the whole for experienceing it. He makes fun of me all the time about my tacky one night stand on the hood of a car. But that one night stand shaped me into a better man. I know who I like, what I like, and know that I need more than a physical relationship to get by. I don't really care to drink anymore either, which he gives me shit for. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

There have been a few tell tale signs that he likes me back, but none of them are concrete and the most obvious ones happen when there are numerous people around, so I can't have a movie moment "I love you" and a kiss, now can I? The other week he talked about a 19 year old that thought he was cute, and how wrong that is. I reminded him quickly that I"M 19, and he gasped and said "What am I doing?!" Now this could mean what am I doing hanging out with a 19 year old, but I want to take it as he's interested. Same goes for just tonight, well technically last night. We were watching Heros with his "best friend" and roomate. We were talking about what powers we would want if we could have only one. Me and his friend both chose Clair's instant healing ability, the obvious best. He chose to read peoples mind, quote "I'd love to be able to know what some people are thinking" and he looked right at me. We locked eyes for what seemed like forever. Probably only 10 seconds.

I wanted so bad to tell him right there, you want to know what I'm thinking Aaron? Well I'm thinking about how attracted I am to you. I'm thinking about how good of a relationship we could foster. And I'm thinking how easily I could fall for you. But I'm also thinking how I dont want to risk our friendship. How I'm terribly afraid of your rejection. And thinking about whether or not I'll get a full nights sleep tonight because I think of this scenario for hours before I sleep.

But of course, there is a crowd, and I don't have the balls to say something like that to someone in person. I wish I did, but I dont. That's why I'm hoping for some amazing moment to tell him, but when it's just him and me. We are HOPEFULLY going to go see Quarentine this weekend, just him and I. We'll see if that pans out, but if it does that'll be a perfect time to try a "date" scenario. I can hold his hand during the scary parts, and treat him to some popcorn or something. Then we'll see how that goes. If not there I'm planning on having a party at my house early in the next week and alcohol makes everything easier to face. And if nothing perfect happens by then, then maybe it's fate telling me to just be direct with him. I'll just sit him down and be like, remember last week when you said you wanted to read minds, well here's my thoughts and tada!

At the same time, if I have to be completely obvious, I'd rather do some sort of awesome action. I'd like to set up dinner for just him and me at my place. With candels and roses. But that might be too creeper-ish, and I don't want to scare him away. I'm a stalker, but he doesn't have to know that just yet. He can learn that on his own time, haha.

Oh well, I"m not sure what to do at this time, but we'll see. I hope everything works out, if not I always have my porn. 3 Cheers for being a guy. Oh and by the way, this title means nothing, I just wanted something random. I hope I stay in contact with you journal. But I probably won't. I'm sorry, and I love you. And will miss you the next time I read this. Kisses!

Review:

This is some glorious ret-conning.  I absolutely love on-island flashbacks.  They are a guarantee that everything in the episode will be relevant. 

In this episode we get to find out what happened to Claire when she was taken by Ethan back in season one.  It's very important and interesting stuff.

Also we meet Alex, and we also get some real insight into what goes on inside Rousseau's mind.

Eko gets a chance to talk to Ben and Ben starts to manipulate Locke.  It's all good stuff. 

I really enjoyed this episode 9.0/10.0

One thing that everyone should learn from this episode is that Ethan was wrong, he went completely against orders when he took Claire.

-Emelie de Ravin is an awful actress.  It's impossible to like the character when she is that terrible.

-Right before Claire escapes from The Others, she decides to give Aaron to them.  Of course she doesn't actually give him away since she escapes soon after, but she really wanted to.

-Claire says that she and Aaron are meant to be together.  They will protect each other, keep each other safe.  Maybe she was right, she was separated from Aaron when her house blew up.

Rousseau

-The episode starts with Claire saying that Aaron has a fever and a rash.  Rousseau comes and tells Claire that Aaron is infected.  (see below)

-Rousseau only has one interest on the island, she wants to get Alex back, she seems to have no desire to be rescued, or to do anything else.

Alex

-They were planning to cut Aaron out of Claire, even if it killed her.  But Alex saved her.  Even way back then Alex was trying to help people.  That's nice that she's always willing to help the survivors.  She's very similar to her mother who attempts to help the survivors whenever she can.

Ethan

-Ethan sedates Claire, but with what?  Doesn't it seem pretty dangerous to sedate a pregnant woman?

-They make it clear in this episode that Ethan was not following orders.  Mr. Friendly lectures him, saying that Ethan was supposed to create a list before he brought Claire in.

Flashbacks (what we knew then):

-The noise in Claire's flashbacks is amazingly scary.

-Jack says that there's nothing wrong with Aaron, and even Desmond tells Claire that the "vaccine" she is giving him is useless.  But the last thing Rousseau says to Claire is "If your baby is infected, I hope you know what must be done."

The Titans are the weakest 5-0 team I have seen in my life. They are not that good and are way overrated. Kerry Collins is nothing special and neither is their running game. Their defense is good but there is no way they should be 5-0 right now. The Ravens should have won this game, hands down. They let it slip away from them, when they had the Titans where they wanted them. I see the Titans as an average .500 team still, despite their record.

I hate Matt Ryan. Let me get that statement out of the way first. The Packers defense has reverted back to the old days of letting people score all over them. Al Harris' injury has been big and Charles Woodson has not been 100% either. The Pack must get Ryan Grant more involved. As soon as they get behind, it is all put on Aaron Rodgers. Stick with Ryan Grant. It works when he gets the ball. The Packers are still 2-0 in the NFC North, which is important, but if they cannot beat teams like Tampa and Atlanta, I am going to have to start picking against them.

Indianapolis 31 Houston 27

I had this game picked! Sage Rosenfels decided he wanted to blow a 17 point lead with 5 freakin' minutes left. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Houston has got to learn how to seal a deal. I realize they are winless but come on, every team needs to have some sort of victory escape plan. The Colts have cemented the fact that they are average. This win proves nothing about them, besides that they are terrible. Peyton looks mediocre, as does Addai. They better pick it up if they want to even MAKE the playoffs.

Washington 23 Philadelphia 17

I am not ready to concede that Washington is a good team. I just can't seem to fit them in with the elite teams in the NFL (there really aren't any though). The defense is pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Clinton Portis is a solid back, but can be fairly inconsistent. Jason Campbell is improving but when the big game comes around in December and January, I think he will crack. Get on me all you want Skins fans, your team is not as good as you think. It is all one, big mirage.

This was a last minute change for me.  Woe is me for picking against Bill Bellicheck after a bye week, but what the hell?  I thought the 49ers could take advantage of being at home and they didn't play poorly, they just turned the ball over too much - 3 INT.  The Patriots had the ball for almost 40 minutes, and that is why they won.  J.T. O'Sullivan is definitely a competent quarterback, but it is becoming clear to me that teams these days do not care as much about the run anymore.  Frank Gore only had 12 carries.  Frank is a very, very good back.  The Big Dawg's gotta eat.  Give him the ball more San Francisco!

Minnesota 30 New Orleans 27

OK, evidentally I have some sort of NFC North curse where whoever I pick does the opposite.  The Saints deserved this win and they blew it.  Martin Gramatica blew it.  Fire him right now.  He is garbage beyond belief.  Sign Morten Anderson.  Gramatica sucks.  Reggie Bush had two punt return touchdowns and Brees had over 300+ yards passing.  The defense played well.  But the Saints decide to take so many penalties and have turnovers galore.  Adrian Peterson was invisible.  This is all on Gramatica.  The NFL's worst kicker.

So, is this a random woman? Is it an Other? Or is this someone we are familiar with? Who was flying with a pregancy test? Does it have nothing to do with actual "barrenness" but with time travel? Or is it with the Island's magnetic qualities? Why can the mother/child survive no later than the 2nd trimester?

Could the lady in question be....Kate? And if so, has she somehow been on the Island and/or contact with "The Others" before (knowingly or unknowingly)?

She has had some moments of "infertility" that we have witnessed. Once with Kevin (her husband), another with Sawyer. Are these just for storyline expediancy or are these clues? She seemed rather "guilty" when asking Sun " Who flies with a pregnancy test? " Edward Mars asks Jack if he "fell for her too" in Tabula Rasa (Season One). Did he mean romantically? Was the test Kate's for EM's baby? If that is true....no baby in that case either.

* I will be discussing Fringe episodes at this point. Just letting you know if you haven't seen them and don't want to get spoiled. ;)

To bring up another JJ Abrams' show, "Fringe", in last week's episode, there was a man that was given an experimental means of communication through his blood that involved heavy metalic content. This person was able to being privy to secret conversations that made him believe that he was "hearing voices" . Are these similar to, or another form of, "The Whispers"? Michael, Sawyer, Jack and Kate (and most likely Walt and tailies as well) all had there blood extracted by the Others. Are they looking to see if they were part of an earlier Dharma experiment much like the one on Fringe?

In Fringe, when they put the man in an MRI, he almost was shredded apart. Is this what is happening with the pregnant women on the Island because of its magnetic properties but in a less concentrated scale? As the womb grows, so does the amount of blood that is encased in it. Has where the Island been "moved" to closer to a polar region, hightening the magnetic "pull" , causing the women and babies on the Island to die?

Or is it the time issue? Is the woman like Richard Alpert seems to be : Young on the outside, older on the inside (much like walking through a used car lot ;) ) ? Is what is on the inside (i.e. baby ) aging as rapidly as the "home" they are growing in? (Again, much like another Fringe episode a couple weeks ago where a woman is immediately pregnant, baby comes to full term, she delivers then dies ...then the "baby" becomes a full grown adult size then dies....4 hours later. )

And is what is in those Dharma shots Claire , Aaron and Desmond were given/taking designed to counteract either the rapid aging and/or polarization factor, so it would help Claire "save" Aaron and Desmond "save the world"?

Then again, they may just be Dharma's version of Carnation Really Instant Breakfast :) .

Driscoll employed a five-point outline for the message. Here's a brief summary:

1. Feed the sheep. Obviously this is the responsibility of pastors/elders, but in some sense, all believers are called to do so. We are all called to speak the gospel to one another in ways that promote our sanctification and maturity in Christ. This is especially evident in the call to be "kind" to other believers (Ephesians 4:32). The importance of this point is this: we are called to be kind, gracious, encouraging, edifying, etc, in our speech towards the sheep. But we are not expected to be kind to wolves.
2. Rebuke the swine. Throughout the Scripture we see repeated examples of God rebuking his "believers" when they fail to act like sheep and instead act like swine. The book of Proverbs is filled with rebuke. Isaiah 3:16-26; Amos 4:1; 6:4-6; Ezekiel 23:17-21 are all examples of God rebuking his people. And we should notice this rebuke is personal. Driscoll says insightfully, "The Bible is easily read when talking about them. It is painfully read when talking about us."
3. Shoot the wolves. Obviously the wolves are false teachers and even Jesus has no love loss for hypocrites and false teachers (see Matthew 23:1-36). Martin Luther said, "With the wolves you cannot be too severe. With the weak sheep you cannot be too gentle." You shoot the wolves because you love the sheep.
4. Bark at the dogs. This point is similar to shooting the wolves.
5. Pray for the shepherds. This was really a powerful call for believers to pray for, defend, encourage and support their shepherds.

I've got a couple of thoughts about the message overall. I thought it was well-crafted, powerful, insightful and inspired courage in the way we use speech to deal with those inside and outside the church. When Driscoll was talking about shooting the wolves he said, "Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is destroy someone before they are destroyed in hell." What Driscoll meant was that sometimes we must use speech to bring people to an end of themselves. I think Driscoll is right in as much as this is the pattern that we see in Scripture. Wasn't this Jesus' goal with the Pharisees in Matthew 23 or God's goal with Job in Job 38:1-40:1? I would like to have seen Driscoll unpackage this loaded statement more from a biblical perspective. I don't believe that strong language, biting sarcasm, irony, etc, are necessarily sinful. But they can be. So what keeps us from using them in sinful ways in the way that we speak to others. I think it boils down to motivation. The Scriptures use harsh language and the motivation is always to humble man and exalt the greatness of God. Sometimes we do the same thing with the same motivation. Humble man and exalt - not God - but ourselves. We need to be careful that we have a righteous motivation when we employ sharp language.

I also thought that the sermon lost focus during the discussion about barking at the dogs. Driscoll certainly had not refrained from using humor and wit in his sermon to this point, but it was at this point that Driscoll really unleashed his wit. My concern is that Driscoll kept pressing that Jesus was really a funny guy (which I believe he was), but that in an effort to justify the use of humor at the expense of others that Driscoll himself began to take center-stage.

The closing of the sermon was powerful and gave a profoundly insightful perspective into the kind of front-line battle Driscoll and his church are engaged in in Seattle. Can you imagine your church being the target of Hump Fest (HF is an amateur porn festival where people submit their amateur porn. To be considered you have to include something that was predetermined by the organizers. This year every submission has to include some kind of visual reference to Mars Hill Church where Driscoll pastors)? Driscoll seemed sincere and repentant of his past public verbal indiscretions.

All in all I grew in my respect for Mark Driscoll and his ministry after this message. He isn't a perfect man but none of us are. I'm grateful for the evidence of grace that I see at work in his life and ministry. I'm thankful for his humility and willingness to put himself under the tutelage of John Piper and CJ Mahaney. I'm eager to pray for him when the Spirit brings him to mind because he is a brother in Christ serving Jesus in a dark place where people obviously both hate him and love him. And, finally, I am thankful because I am reminded in this message that I have a responsibility to speak courageously and thoughtfully both inside and outside the church. God give me grace to do so.

No, this is not about Dan's ill-fated dive into the movie business. You will have to wait until later to hear that story. This is a different kind of story. This is the story of faint, eerie, and mysterious echos emanating from the far reaches of a dark, misty cave. This is a story of that which pierces a man's heart like a icy toothpick. This is a story of feelings.

As we have grown and plugged into "normal" life more and more, my friends and I have scattered across the country. Perhaps we are burrowing deep to hide until it is time to explode in world domination! Are any Homeland Security Paranoids listening? While technology has given us a good measure of contact, there is a non-filthy touch that is missing. I choose to satisfy this urge with the vehicle of the U.S. Postal Service, of which I was an employee for a very brief time. Put simply, I send weird shit to people.

This started when the first of us left the motherland. Louis was in Illinois, attending grad school for a subject he selected "just because". As frequent readers of this blog may remember Princeton was the era before Mike left for the Air Force. He and I shared an apartment, and entertained frequent guests. One day we where overturning all the couch cushions for a reason I cannot recall, but it was a long and difficult process given the three long and elaborate couches we owned. As an aside, we left all three when we snuck out in the middle of the night. I hope they are all safe and well still at Princeton, or at least that big, metal fucker left a dent in the wall or someone's knee (spellchecker knows "fucker").

While exploring the couch crevasses we discovered a very smashed brownie. It was luckily still sealed in clear plastic, but there was no labeling of any kind upon the wrapper. Mike and I were nought concerned for how it got there, but what kind of brownie it was. Like a bolt from Valhalla the idea hit us.

"Louis is in grad school for chemistry. He must have access to a lab for analysis!"

With that we grabbed a free USPS Priority envelope, crammed the brownie in there and shipped it off to Louis. We forgot about it shortly thereafter, only reminded when Louis called a few weeks later...

"What is this?"

"A brownie we found in the couch for you to analyze."

We are still waiting for the report.

Here we reach a time of long pause between "shipments". I picked up the practice again when I was in Japan, knowing Mike's affinity for weird foods. I shipped him some freeze-dried squid, and strange shaped Japanese candy. He was very thankful. Whenever I find some odd food idea I grab it for Mike. I have sent him a few things over the last few years.

Another friend of mine always raved about how great Ikea was, and invited me to travel up to Toronto, the closest Ikea to Buffalo. Why do I want to drive 1.5 hours and waste the entire day just to get a couch? It was only years later I visited an Ikea and learned they have all kinds of stuff. Things that would have been vital for me, especially at a cheap price, as a college/just out of college individual. As a result I purposely placed the blame on the very man who tried to introduce me to Ikea. Realistically he is the last person I should take revenge upon, but who said "shipping" is logical. For his actions my revenge took the form of a smashed Ikea fountain drink cup from my first trip to Ikea. That son of a bitch got his.

The next example is a personal shipment. Those familiar with those of this blog well know Louis's fanatical addiction to Mountain Dew. Because of this, while on a drive to his home in D.C. we left a 2 liter bottle of the Nectar of the Gods on his door step, rang the door bell, and hid around the corner. Moment's later we heard the door open and the expected "Uh!" I suspect that if we had not then emerged Louis would have cradled his sweet liquor back inside, leaving us for dead.

The camera on your cell phone makes the perfect tool for "shipping" pictures of weird findings to others. I often send pictures to Mike of weird foods that he loves so much. I sometimes buy these to send him, like the tiny, dried fish snack I found in Japan. Weird beer labels also make their way in digital format to Mike. Louis gets pictures of oddly-shaped containers.

When I find these items my wife used to shake her head and call me weird, but she occasionally links a product to a person before I do. The most recent was when Louis was visiting us. Where were in Chinatown, waiting for our Ghost Tour to begin. We wasted the time inspecting the isles of a Chinese trinket shoppe. My wife found a whined up masturbating monkey. No sooner had she pointed this out that she said, "That would be perfect for Dan!" And right she was. A week later I found a comment on this blog as to Dan's confirmation of receiving this shipment.

I may be forgetting some of the other shipments I have sent over the years. I'm sure my fellow posters will remind me.

Some advice. Do not include any letter, label, or explanation with your shipments. Just smile as you drop them in the mail, and wait to get the inevitable email. You need to link the trinket with the person you send it to. The USPS has free Priority envelopes and boxes to ship your "hello old friend" package. I urge you to stay connected by shipping unannounced items to your friends. I have received threats of being sent shipments in return, but nothing yet. Since I am far more organized than any of my friends I will believe it when I see it. Will this post be the billboard material they needed to follow through?

Only last week did I happen to come across some plastic eyeball glasses, which today have found their way into the mail, addressed for Matt. I am hoping this will scare him out
