Vostro 2510, originally uploaded by Dell Digital Media.

I'm currently using an Inspiron 700m. I've been using it ever since it came out fall of 2004. While I love the portability of the little guy, it's been aging on me and even with a massive memory and hard disk upgrade, it's slowly unable to perform the tasks that I'd like it to do, such as running 720p video smoothly, processing Photoshop routines quickly, amongst other things. I also wanted to take the plunge into VIsta, which may be either a really smart or stupid decision.

Furthermore, my mother has been carping at me to get a laptop with a larger screen, since she's very concerned with my eyes. She insisted that I get something that was at least 14 inches large. I was reluctant at first, since I love the portability of 12-13 inch notebooks, but I didn't want to go against my mother's word. I decided that I would go for the smallest possible size. The size/weight requirements that I set personally for my laptop were as follows:

Screen Size: 13.3-15.4", preferably 14.1"
Weight: 13", under 4.66 lbs. 14" under 5.33 lbs., 15" under 6 lbs.
Thickness: 1" or less

As you can see, I put some pretty stringent weight requirements because I will undoubtedly be carrying this laptop around with me everywhere. I assumed that any laptop offerings fulfilling these requirements would be good enough to run anything I throw at it. I'm not a big PC gamer, and even if I did want to game I'd just build a custom desktop rig. Notebooks for me are a workhorse type of computer, and with that in mind, I wanted something that looked professional, yet had style to boot.

While I've hated the way Dell desktops have been built in the last few years and swore to never ever buy a desktop from Dell again, I had a decent experience with their laptops. They've gotten more and more full-featured, with better design elements with every iteration. Their recent XPS and Studio offerings looked good. While the XPS laptops looked really nice, I was flummoxed by the weight and thickness of the Studio laptops. I'm reluctant to go for the XPS m1330 and Lenovo IdeaPad U330 because I fear my mother's wrath,

After careful consideration of which laptop to buy next, I've zeroed in on the Dell Vostro 2510. I had been waiting for the E-Series Latitude notebooks to come out, but they've kind of disappointed me. I thought they were going to be better built and nicer looking. The trim, while probably built like a tank, looks kind of cheap. I'd rather go for the Vostro, which is less well built but no less full featured, and a lot less expensive (ditto on the XPS m1530, which is similarly expensive with the Latitudes). The processor choices are plenty for me, with Penryn cores available to choose from, as well as standard 1440x900 screen, which allows me to run 720p media without going into full screen and to edit 1280 px width pictures at 100% view. It has a slot loading optical drive, which is a nice touch. I wish Dell would allow us to choose different color trim, however. It's currently only available in red, although it's not a bad color. I just prefer black --- easier to manage dirt and scratches. On the technical side, I kind of lament the lack of HDMI out and the lack of Centrino 2. Adding some Magnesium to the case wouldn't hurt either. And if only Dell introduced a Vostro 2410; I'd snatch it up in an instant, since 15.4" is a little large for my tastes. For the price, this offering is a great value. Although not mind blowing, it fulfills my weight/thickness requirements at 5.72 lbs. and 1" thick.

Still, I'm not completely sold yet on the Vostro 2510. I'm also considering the Lenovo IdeaPad Y430, which is yet to be released, much like the U330. Obviously, since neither Lenovo notebook has been released, I don't know much technically about them. They do look good, however.

[wp_caption id="attachment_436" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo: Richard3."][/wp_caption]

Lenovo has done a very good job of showing a couple of limitations on the MacBook Air and then making sure that viewers see clearly how the X300 is just as thin but superior in some ways. There is one very important feature of the X300 that needs to be mentioned: the pixel format on the 13.3" LED backlit LCD is 1440 x 900, which is quite a bit more than the MacBook Air's 1280 x 800.

LG has always built sophisticated and powerful notebook PCs. LG comes through again with its LG P300. The P300 is in response to Lenovo's X300, Apple's MacBook Air and a few other lightweight 13.3" notebook PCs. The main marketing theme is that the P300 is light and thin. The P300 is on the light side at 3.52lbs but ends up being porkier than both the X300 and MacBook Air. Have a look at the comparison below. The P300 is thin too and has a wedge design that is popular these days: 0.83" to 0.90". Clearly, the MacBook Air is much thinner and so is the X300. So neither is the P300 the thinnest or the lightest.

Well, my little 13.3″ MacBook finally gave up on me. Generally, I upgrade my laptops once ever

Well, my little 13.3" MacBook finally gave up on me. Generally, I upgrade my laptops once every 12-15 months but I enjoyed my MacBook so much I kept it until it finally gave up on me. I am by no means an Apple fan girl at all but I will give credit where it is due whether it be Apple and Mac OS X, Dell, <strike>Windows</strike> (ok, that wasn't fair - I have much respect for this OS :)), various other names, or Linux.

I primarily used my MacBook for work, carrying it back and forth to the office every day, traveling across North America with it, and of course using it at home. After about a year, the case began to crack (along the front left and right side by the trackpad) and the battery stopped holding it's charge (to the point where I couldn't use it without charging it for longer than 20 minutes) - the well known problems. Here I am 19 months later and I finally had to retire my little 13.3" friend. Yes, I could've replaced the battery and probably will eventually.

Now I sit here and type this post from my new MacBook Pro. Because I have tiny hands and I'm just really not a very big person in general....this is going to take a lot of getting used to. Almost half of my forearm rests on the wrist pad and my hands look incredibly little on the keyboard. I look like a child using it and I'm finding myself making typos more often than before. Aside from having to get used to the size, the weight is hardly noticeable and I'm loving it, along with Leopard.

There are quite a few new things to learn in Leopard, but so far I'm liking it all.

Postanowiłem go rozwiązać i się sprawdzić.

Gdyby uznać tą moją odpowiedź, to miałbym 13 poprawnych odpowiedzi, czyli 140 punktów. Miałbym szanse wstąpić do Mensy.

Ostatnio taki test robiłem sobie kilka lat temu, a dokładniej w szóstej klasie podstawówki.

Being elite is positive. The target date of arrival is 2/1, which means the "must arrive before this day" is 2/15. So I am psyched that your NSLs [newsletters] arrived in that window.

R, this in not an emoticon. It is "|33+ 5p33|<" or leet speek, or elite speak. It is used to show the writer's lack of a social life, coupled with some kind of obscure typing skills.

Her hafta 1 saat koşmak bile, kalp hastalığı riskini yüzde 42 oranında azaltabiliyor.

Awrighty, le's see here (a flowah hums, licks a thumb-petal, pages through the news) . . .

Oh, here we go: Patsy Brumfield's a-stir over at the Daily Journal with another funny lede:

OXFORD - If famed Oxford lawyer Richard "Dickie" Scruggs misses Sunday's NFL Super Bowl, blame the judge.

Scruggs was ordered Friday to submit to questions, under oath, from State Farm and Casualty Co. in its case against Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood.

State Farm claims Hood has launched an "unconstitutional" criminal investigation of the agency when he had agreed not to, relating to Hurricane Katrina lawsuits.

"I've been in a position that the lawyers on the other side made me take depositions during the Super Bowl game," Chief Judge Michael P. Mills offered as consolation to both legal sides before him in U.S. District Court.

Sunday's game starts at 5 p.m.

Whatever time is chosen will be a mutual decision between State Farm and Scruggs' attorneys, represented by Travis LeBlanc on Friday.

"I don't care - you work out the details," Mills told them. ...

More good stuff there, including that John Keker is due back in-country tomorrow, and that Judge Mills said "[I]t appears to me" that Dickie's deposition is required so that SD Miss's Judge David Bramlette "can consider its results as it relates other legal maneuvering in the State Farm case."

Now over at CNNMoney.com, they got an AP story on SD Miss U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton's quailing at the thought of intervening in Ex rel. Rigsby.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal authorities have declined to take over a 'whistleblower' lawsuit, filed by an embattled plaintiffs attorney, that accuses insurers of overbilling the federal government for Hurricane Katrina's flood damage in Mississippi.

A federal magistrate in Gulfport, Miss., set a deadline Thursday for the U.S. Department of Justice to intervene in the case, which attorney Richard 'Dickie' Scruggs and other lawyers filed more than a year before he was charged in November with trying to bribe a Mississippi judge.

On Thursday, federal authorities informed U.S. Magistrate Robert Walker that they aren't intervening 'at this time' but will continue to investigate allegations that insurance companies defrauded the government in handling flood claims resulting from Katrina.

'The Government's investigation has not been completed, as certain potentially relevant information has not become available,' U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton and Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bucholtz wrote in court papers.

Lampton and Bucholtz didn't elaborate on the nature of that information, but said they couldn't decide by Thursday's deadline whether to proceed. They asked Walker to seek the government's written consent before approving a dismissal or settlement of the case. ...

As opposed to WTOK-Meridian's five-sentence almost-why-bother, CNN's version of this story names State Farm, Nationwide, Allstate, USAA, and "several engineering firms that contracted with the companies" as the defendants in Rigsby, and provides both sides' reactions to Lampton's non-move:

The case against State Farm and several other insurers has remained in a holding pattern while both sides waited for the Justice Department to reach a decision.

'Now that the government has chosen not to intervene at this time, we stand ready to defend against the allegations in the lawsuit brought by Mr. Scruggs. We will proceed with a vigorous defense of this matter,' State Farm spokesman Phil Supple said Friday.

Anthony DeWitt, a lawyer whose Kansas City, Mo.-based firm teamed up with Scruggs to file the suit, said the plaintiffs are eager to proceed without the Justice Department's involvement.

'We intend to move forward and prosecute this case with all deliberate speed,' DeWitt said Friday. 'At this point, there isn't any reason to further delay the case.'

DeWitt claims that it beats him whether DoJ is reluctant to intervene in the case because of Dickie Scruggs's other federal criminal charges. "Who knows what may have impacted their decision?" Dickie's still involved in this case, though he's withdrawn from others since getting his fanny indicted, DeWitt says, adding, "I can't speak for him. I know we are doing something on this case every day."

Well, cool, Mr. DeWitt, but we'd appreciate even more your letting slip what, exactly, Dickie's doing with it.

(licks thumb-petal again, browses a few more pages, gives up and, still humming, wanders off to check on the State of the Teapot . . . )

Ultra-light and ultra-thin notebook PCs are, as expected, getting more publicity. You can thank Apple for that. Apple sparked a new genre of ultra-thin notebook PCs with its introduction of the MacBook Air at MacWorld 2008.So, Lenovo has entered the ring with the X300. The X300 might not be as sexy as the MacBook Air, but it is lighter, by 0.5lbs.

The LCD is more advanced as well, sporting 1440 x 900 pixels compared to just 1280 x 800 in the MacBook Air. The X300 also has a faster CPU: 2.0GHz versus 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz. The wireless options are quite a bit better too giving you the choice between WiMax or HSDPA compared to just WiFi, even if it is the improved 802.11n variety. The X300 got the MacBook Air beat in another area as well.
